Heart
a muscular organ that pumps blood through the body
Atrium
two upper chambers of the heart
Ventricles
two lower chambers of the heart
Septum
wall separating the left and right sides of the heart
Artery
a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart
Vein
a blood vessel that carries blood to the heart
Capillary
a tiny blood vessel where substances are exchanged
between the blood and the body cells
Valves
prevent back flow of blood
Plasma
the liquid part of blood
White blood cell
a blood cell that fights disease
Red blood cell
a cell in the blood that takes up oxygen in the lungs and
delivers it to cells in the body
Platelet
a cell fragment (piece) that helps form blood clots
Pulse
expansion and relaxation of an artery wall as blood travels
through the artery
Blood Pressure
pressure exerted by blood against the walls of blood vessels
