Xu Weiting U062115A 91500488 Project Title Survey and public awareness of the Common Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) in Singapore Project Description Even though, the Common Palm Civet is native to Singapore, not much information is known about them locally. The study intends to address the need regarding distribution status and population characteristics of this species. These studies would be completed with the use of camera trapping techniques and line transects in different areas of Singapore. In addition, Singapore has experienced extensive deforestation, which leads to the increased sighting of Paradoxurus hermaphroditus in urban settings. Therefore, the public perception and awareness of the Common Palm Civet would also be investigated through surveys with NUS students and the public, The data from the project allows us to have a better understanding of the biology of the native Common Palm Civets that still exist within Singapore and also to aid in the conservation of one of the last remaining carnivore that Singapore has. Project Objectives There are three objectives for this project. Firstly, the project aims to understand the population characteristics such as population size and distribution of the Common Palm Civet found in Siglap. Secondly, the status of the Paradoxurus hermaphroditus in Singapore can also be established. Through this project and perception surveys, the level of public awareness can be raised through appropriate means of public education to allow people to learn and to appreciate the civets, thus, aiding in their conservation.
