Real Food In Schools
Time for Lunch Campaign
Labor Day Weekend 2009
Dear Slow Food Members and Friends,
Join Us for our National Day of Action to get
real food in schools, Labor Day September
7th. Since this is Cape Cod, we are also
including September 4th for those who may
not want to travel Route 6 or 28 on Labor
Day. Two different events, covering both
sides of Cape Cod, one goal to improve The
Child Nutrition Act which governs the National
School Lunch Program
Here is the scoop - we are asking parents, teachers, students, and every
responsible citizen to speak up and tell our National Leaders that a change
can't wait, it is time for REAL FOOD IN SCHOOLS. We have organized two "Eat
In" Events on the Cape over Labor Day weekend. The idea is to band together
to show our support of REAL FOOD in schools, so far 275 chapters across the
USA are involved. This Fall, The Child Nutrition Act , hits the floor in Congress,
it governs the National School Lunch Program. This law comes up for
reauthorization just every 4 or 5 years, so now is our chance to ask for
changes. We can raise the bar for 30 million children who eat a school lunch
every day. Read our platform and support the effort , since we all know we can
do better (and we will have some fun while we are at it).
Show your support and join us, I look forward to seeing you at the events.

PS - if you cannot attend, you can still do a lot to help. Go to the Slow Food
USA web site and sign the petition. At the time of this writing, there are
11, 716 petition signers, it is growing quickly. Tell 5 friends to sign the
petition. Call our US House of Representatives Congressman, Bill Delahunt, as
few as 10 unexpected calls can make a difference. Tell him you are interested
in adding $1.00 per child lunch to the Child Nutrition Act. It is time we provide
America's children with real food in schools, and that includes what goes into
all of those vending machines. Also you can call or write our State
Senator, John Kerry. The Slow Food USA web site has helpful tips on what to
say. Keep me posted as to your progress!

Let's show our solidarity with all other Slow Food chapters across the USA on

event at Nauset Regional High School in Eastham, by the athletic fields, there
is a memorial park area. Gretel Norgeot, of Checkerberry Farm is going to join
us and discuss the plans for plantings at the school. Gretel runs the Orleans
Farmers Market and has been a driving force in keeping farming alive and
ticking here on the Cape. She has been working with Tom Conrad, principle at
the high school about planting at the school. We can also discuss the idea of
getting the green house operational, and starting a pumpkin patch, which in
turn could offer so many opportunities for the students.
About Us
Slow Food Cape Cod is a local convivium (chapter) of Slow Food USA, a
501(c)3 non profit organization dedicated to promoting the pleasures of the
table.
Our mission is to take the time to bring joy into our everyday meal, to know
where our food came from - eat local and experience the superior taste of
dishes prepared with fresh, in season, ingredients, while preserving our
regional heritage. Our convivium is going to explore these concepts with field
trips to farms and markets, tastings, pot- luck suppers, book discussions, and
cooking classes; all celebrating the sustainable farms, fishermen, artisans,
cheese makers, foragers, bakers, beekeepers, and regional specialties that
define our area.
