Lesson Plan Week of February 13, 2012 Grade Level: Secondary Subject: Studio Piano Overview & Purpose The course work for music history, piano technique, music theory, classical piano studies/repertoire, and music appreciation run simultaneously. MUSIC HISTORY (Neo-Classical Era) Ludwig van Beethoven ( /ˈlʊ dvɪ ɡ væn ˈbeɪ t.hoʊ və n/; German pronunciation: [ˈluːtvɪ ç fan ˈbeːt.hoːfən] ( listen); baptized 17 December 1770[1] – 26 March 1827) was a German[2] composer and pianist. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. Born in Bonn, then the capital of the Electorate of Cologne and part of the Holy Roman Empire, Beethoven moved to Vienna in his early 20s, studying with Joseph Haydn and quickly gaining a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. His hearing began to deteriorate in his late twenties, yet he continued to compose, conduct, and perform, even after becoming completely deaf. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (German: [ˈvɔ lfɡ aŋ amaˈdeus ˈmoːtsaʁ t], English see fn.),[1] baptismal name Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart[2] (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791), was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. He composed over 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers. PIANO TECHNIQUE (Primary technical studies: The Virtuoso Pianist (Le Piano virtuose) by Charles-Louis Hanon, is a compilation of sixty exercises meant to train the pianist in speed, precision, agility, and strength of all of the fingers and flexibility in the wrists. First published in Boulogne, in 1873, The Virtuoso Pianist is Hanon's most well-known work, and is still widely used by piano instructors and pupils. PIANO PRACTICE AND STUDY The students receive group and individual instruction each week. The following daily practice schedule is encouraged.
