Cell Growth and Division Test
Multiple Choice:
Circle the letter that is next to the correct answer.
1.Put the stages in order...(Obj. 1 Knowledge)
A. Prophase, Anaphase, Metaphase, Telephase, Cytokinesis
B. Cytokinesis, Prophase, Telephase, Anaphase, Metaphase
C. Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telephase, Cytokinesis
D. Metaphase, Anaphase, Prophase, Cytokinesis, Telephase
2. If the nuclear envelope has dissolved and the chromosomes are not yet lined up, what stage is
the cell in? (Obj. 7 Comprehension)
A. Prophase
B. Synthesis
C. Telephase
D. Cytokinesis
3. A scientist was looking through a microscope and saw a cell that had two nucleuses all
contained within one cell membrane. What could have caused this? (Obj. 5 Application)
A. The cell had not gone through cytokinesis yet.
B. The cell is a special type of cell that always has two nucleuses.
C. The cell got stuck in prophase and hasn't finished yet.
D. This is never possible, the microscope must have been out of focus.
4. What is a reason for a cell to divide? (Obj. 3 Knowledge)
A. The cell next to it divided.
B. There is too much volume.
C. The cytoplasm is too old.
D. Too much stored energy.
5. What cells have the potential to become any kind of cell in the body? (Obj. 11 Knowledge)
A. Somatic cell
B. Germ cell
C. Cancer cell
D. Stem cell
6. It is important for DNA to condense so that… (Obj. 4 Comprehension)
A. The DNA has room to duplicate.
B. The DNA can forms chromosomes.
C. The DNA has less water in it.
D. The DNA can make proteins.
7. Which of these is NOT a reason for the length of interphase… (Obj. 6 Knowledge)
A. The cell replicates DNA during this time.
B. The cell needs to grow so that there is enough to divide.
C. The cell goes through cytokinesis during this time.
D. The cell needs to store energy to divide.
True or False
Write “True” if the statement is true and “False” if the statement is false. If you chose to
use “T” and “F” then make sure that I can tell the difference. If I cannot tell the difference it will
automatically be marked wrong.
8. __F___The DNA is replicated during prophase. (Obj. 7 Knowldege)
9. __T___Apoptosis is the cell killing itself because something in the cell is wrong and
uncorrectable. (Obj. 12 Comprehension)
10. __T___The cell is always receiving signals to divide, but it doesn't always follow them.
(Obj. 3 Knowledge)
11. __F___When a cell is cancerous; it is still in control of its division. (Obj. 12 Knowledge)
12. __T___If the cell is too small after it divides then too many proteins will be produced for the
cell to be able to handle. (Obj. 2 Comprehension)
Matching
Write the letter of the word that is defined by the statement in the blank. (Obj. 9
Knowledge)
A. Centriole
B. Nuclear Envelope
C. Chromosome
D. Chromatid
E. Centromere
13. _B___The membrane that surrounds the genetic material in the cell.
14. _D___A single copy of the genetic information.
15. _E___The part of a chromosome that the spindle fiber attaches to.
16. _C___2 copies of DNA connected together at the beginning of cell division.
17. _A___The structure that the spindle fiber grows out of during cell division.
Short Answer
Use complete sentences and complete thoughts to answer the following questions.
Cell Type
Life Span
Cell Division
Lining of esophagus
2-3 days
Can divide
Lining of small
intestine
1-2 days
Can divide
Lining of large
intestine
6 days
Can divide
Red blood cells
Less than 120 days
Cannot divide
White blood cells
10 hours to decades Many do not divide
Smooth muscle
Long-lived
Can divide
Cardiac (heart)muscle
Long-lived
Cannot divide
Skeletal muscle
Long-lived
Cannot divide
Neuron (nerve cell)
Long-lived
Most do not divide
18. Based on the data in the chart, how are the consequences of injuries to the heart and spinal
cord similar? How are they different from injuries to smooth muscles? (Obj. 10 Analysis)
When the cells of the heart and the spinal cord die they don’t divide to heal the injury so
the injuries are permanent. Smooth muscles however do divide so the injuries can heal
themselves.
19. Explain the difference between internal regulators and external regulators and how they
affect the cell cycle? Give an example of a protein used or how each one affects the cell cycle.
(Obj. 8 comprehension)
Internal regulators are proteins within the cell that regulate the cell cycle where as external
regulators are proteins on the outside of the cell. Cyclin is an internal regulator that affects
spindle fibers. Some surface proteins that are external regulators can tell when they are
already sitting next to another cell and can inhibit division.
20. Why is interphase the longest portion of the cell cycle? What would happen if the interphase
portion of the cell cycle was too short? (Obj. 6 Application)
Interphase gives the cell time to grow, replicate the DNA, build up enough mass to be able
to divide into decent sized cells, and run mechanisms that make sure that everything is
correct in the cell. If interphase is too short then the cell may divide before the DNA has
time to replicate, there may not be enough organelles for the two new cells, there may not
be enough mass.
21. Explain the parts of the cell cycle and the main event in each part. (Obj. 7 Comprehension)
G1 allows the cell to grow and do its job.
S synthesis allows DNA to replicate
G2 allows everything to get ready for division
Division is when the cell divides in two
Cytokinesis is when the cell membrane splits the cell into two new cells
