You should be loyal to the person above you- son to father, younger sibling to older sibling, subject to ruler, wife to husband, friend to friend. Similar to what happened in Rome, China broke up in to separate kingdoms. Han, Tang, Song, Yuan Since they used Meritocracy, it didn’t matter what class you were born into, you just had to prove your skill. The foreigners were his friends. He ended the system of civil service exams and didn’t believe in Confucius learning. He trusted foreigners because he was a foreigner- Mongols.
