Welcome to Geometry with Mr. Sidman Geometry is the second of three math courses required for graduation. In this course you will learn the properties and real-world applications of two-dimensional polygons, circles and 3-D solids. More generally, geometry improves your ability to think visually, spatially and logically. You will practice explaining your thinking, using defined steps supported by evidence. Communicating clearly and convincingly is a useful skill in many jobs & careers. Required Supplies Bring these tools every day. These will be checked along with your signed syllabus as your first HW assignment due Tuesday 9/8. Talk with Mr. Sidman if providing these is difficult. 1. Composition notebooks for each semester, containing graph paper if possible. 2. Loose ruled or graph paper for assignments that are turned in. 3. Protractor for measuring angles. Small, clear, solid protractors are better. 4. Compass for making circles and arcs. Try to buy a metal compass with an adjustment wheel which is more durable. Compasses can be purchased through the school office. 5. At least 3 pencils, erasers and a sharpener. Complete all homework and tests in pencil. 6. Green or red ballpoint pen for making corrections. 7. An arithmetic calculator which costs as little as $2. A scientific calculator such as a TI-30 is suggested but not required. It has keys for the trigonometric ratios SIN, COS, and TAN. However, you will also be given a handout of trigonometric values. Graphing calculators are o.k. Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences are Monday, November 23, 1:30-8:30pm. Textbook Discovering Geometry: An Investigative Approach, Key Curriculum Press, 2003. Keep your assigned textbook at home for homework. We use class books at school. You can also access the online textbook by following instructions on the class webpage. Grading Per math department policy, all geometry courses use the following: 35% Team classwork, homework, and good citizenship (clean up, follow rules) 65% Weekly quizzes, tests and ‘real-world’ math projects Absence Make-Up The school policy is that if you have an excused absence slip for a one day, you have two additional days to submit assignments upon your return. Two days excused, four days to make it up, etc. Outside this policy, no credit is given for late work. Quiz Improvements To improve a weekly quiz grade, stay after school 2:15 - 2:45 to review and retake another version of the quiz. Retakes must happen before the end-of-the-unit test. To earn an ‘A’ on a retake, you must tutor someone else and help them to improve their grade, as well as earn an ‘A’ on your own retake. Test Improvements If you would like to improve a test grade, work through the exercises for that unit on Khan Academy. The level of proficiency you achieve determines how much your grade will improve. The maximum improved grade is a B. See the instructions on the course webpage. Extra Help 1. Mr. Sidman is available for tutoring most days from 2:15 to 2:45. Look at the homework board at the back of the room to confirm availability. 2. Math and English teachers are in the school library to assist students from 2:10 to 3:00, Monday through Thursday. This is also a quiet place to do homework and access the internet. 3. National Honor Society students tutor in room 134 on Thursdays. Class Expectations 1. Be on time, every day. As described in the student handbook, students not seated by the bell are marked Tardy. After five minutes, students not present are marked Absent. 2. Have the tools and materials to get the job done. See the required supplies. 3. Be polite and interact productively with classmates and the teacher. 4. Participate fully in your team’s work. Do your assigned job on the team for that day. Make sure everyone understands a solution before moving on. Let everyone be heard. 5. Keep track of due dates using a digital planner or paper calendar. 6. Come in for tutoring when necessary. Take advantage of retakes & extra credit. 7. Communicate clearly. a) Write neatly. b) Show all calculations. Label diagrams and graphs. c) Box your final answer. Include units of measure when appropriate. d) Leave a blank line between each solution. 8. Leave your workplace neat and clean. a) Return class textbook and tools to the shelf. b) Remove any trash from inside your desk. c) Pick up any trash off the floor near your desk, even if it is not yours. d) Push in your chair. At the end of the day, 6th period places chairs on desks. 9. Follow the rules. (See the student handbook.) a) No food in the classroom. Eat in the lunchroom & commons. b) No beverages in the classroom. Plain water in a closed container is o.k. c) No electronics which interfere with instruction and team communication. Specifically, iPods, gaming devices and headphones are turned off and put away. d) No students in the halls in the first or last ten minutes of class. Outside of those times, you are welcome to use the clipboard restroom pass without asking. One student may use the pass at a time. Do not use it so long that others cannot use it. Abuse of the restroom pass may result in losing the privilege of using it. e) Clean up and return to your seat until dismissed by the bell. 10. Be truthful and trustworthy. Cite sources. Complete tests only with permitted resources. Do not use phones during a test. The school policy is that the first instance of plagiarism or test cheating results in zero on the assignment, a parent call and administrative referral. The second offense of the year results in the student losing credit for that class. It is o.k. and encouraged to work on HW together, but not to copy.
