Spelling Activity Options for Mrs. Rights’ 1st Graders
Word Smart/Verbal-Linguistic: I enjoy reading, writing, and speaking.
1. Write the words 3 times each in your neatest handwriting.
2. Use each word in a sentence and underline the spelling word.
3. Write silly sentences using the letters in the spelling words. (Example: Waves - Wanda and Vinny eat sardines.)
Number Smart/Logical-Mathematical: I enjoy working with numbers and science.
1. Make a secret code for each word. Include an answer key. (Example: consonants = 1, vowels = 0; or A = 1, B= 2, etc.)
2. Put the words in alphabetical order.
3. Write each word. Circle the vowels and underline the consonants. Make a tally chart to record the results.
Picture Smart/Visual-Spatial: I enjoy painting, drawing, and visualizing.
1. Draw a picture for each of the words.
2. Write each letter of the words in a different color.
3. Make a word search using the spelling words. Circle the words.
Body Smart/Bodily-Kinesthetic: I enjoy doing hands-on activities.
1. Make a set of flash cards and use them to study the spelling words.
2. Do a dance or movements while spelling the words. (Examples: Head, shoulders, knees, and toes; Macarena; YMCA;
marshmallow clap; hand jive)
3. Spell the words with your finger in different materials, such as sand, noodles, shaving cream, clay, etc.
Nature Smart/Naturalistic: I enjoy the world of plants and animals.
1. Spell words using natural materials such as twigs, leaves, and stems.
2. Code spelling words using animal names. (Example: frog-rat-insect-elephant-numbat-dinosaur = friend)
3. Draw a landscape and hide your spelling words in the picture.
Music Smart/Musical: I enjoy making and listening to music.
1. Clap and chant the letters of each word.
2. Say the letters of each word with a different kind of voices, such as whisper, mouse, loud, accent, etc.
3. Sing the spelling words to the tune of another song. Here are some ideas:
3 letter words: This Old Man, Jingle Bells
4 letter words: Are You Sleeping?, YMCA
5 letter words: You Are My Sunshine, BINGO
6 letter words: Happy Birthday, The Farmer in the Dell
7 letter words: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star
8 letter words: We Wish You a Merry Christmas, For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow
9 letter words: I’m a Little Tea Pot
People Smart/Interpersonal: I enjoy working with others.
1. Take a practice test with a parent.
2. With a partner, take turns writing the letters of each spelling word.
3. Play fill in the blank of a sentence with a partner. One partner gives a sentence saying “blank” instead of the spelling
word, and the other partner writes the word that belongs in the blank.
Self Smart/Intrapersonal: I enjoy working by myself.
1.
Practice words using the look, think, cover, write, check method.
Look, Think, Cover, Write, Check
a. Look carefully at the new word. How can you break it into smaller parts? Do any of the smaller parts remind
you of the patterns of letters from other words?
b. Think about the parts of the words that could cause problems such as double letters or a vowel that is not
pronounced as you would expect.
c. Cover the word and close your eyes. Try to see it in your mind’s eye.
Write the word down without looking at it.
d. Check to see if you are right. If not, look carefully at where you went wrong and try again.
2. Write a memory trick for each word, something that will help you remember how to spell it. (Example: Together is 3
words – to, get, her. I’m a friend to the end.)
3. Make your own activity. Be creative!
