課本習題參考解答
1 According to the reading, all the species on Earth, including animals, plants, and microorganisms,
have important roles to play. The range and variety of life within an ecosystem, such as a rain
forest, a desert, or even the entire Earth, is referred to as biodiversity. Healthy biodiversity helps
insure a balanced ecosystem and the survival of all the species within it. This is the reason why it
is important to conserve our planet's biodiversity.
2 I don't think it is very sensible to cut down other local trees to make room for more tung flowers.
Tung flowers are indeed very beautiful, and many people enjoy the wonderful sight of
flower-capped mountaintops. However, all trees are an essential part of nature, and we should
not cut down certain trees just because other kinds of trees have flowers that are considered to
be “more beautiful.” In fact, as far as species diversity is concerned, the balance of an
ecosystem cannot be sustained without protecting as many species as possible. Leaving nature
as it is may be one of the best ways to take care of our already endangered planet.

Exercise B
I
Flora, fauna, and microorganisms of all species have important roles to play in the natural
balance of life on Earth. A group of different organisms, together with the environment they live in,
form what is called an “ecosystem,” which consists of various plant and animal species, and their
habitats. To maintain the balance in an ecosystem, biodiversity is the key.
All species on Earth have important roles to play. For example, bees carry pollen from plant to
plant during their search for food. If bees became extinct, many important plants would not be
pollinated, and would fail to bear flowers, fruit or grain. For human beings, crop yields would fall
abruptly, inevitably causing food shortages to arise around the world. Hence, it is no exaggeration to
say that bees are of the utmost importance to human survival.
Biodiversity is the key that ensures the balance of the world's ecosystems and the continued
survival of all the life. Biodiversity includes genetic diversity, species diversity, and habitat diversity.
Different genes, different species, and the natural habitats allow species to grow and develop.
II
Happiness is a feeling of being pleased and satisfied. When you are happy, your mind is filled
with comfort, peace, and love. The feeling of happiness has nothing to do with wealth, status, or
power.
The feeling of happiness enriches life. In a state of happiness, people tend to think of more
good things than bad. Therefore, it makes you look friendlier and easier to get along with. As a
result, you will be more likely to have more friends, which will in turn bring more happiness. If you
are happy, you will also tend to look on the bright side of things. If you are happy, you will be less
likely to complain and you have even more opportunities to be successful.
Happiness is a mental state. No matter what difficulty is in your way, the feeling of happiness
will help you overcome difficulty, making you more likely to return to the state of happiness. This is
socalled the “virtuous circle.”
