Jumpstart Course Descriptions AC-161 - Principles of Accounting I This course emphasizes the nature and purpose of financial accounting as a means of recording, classifying and interpreting accounting data. It includes the use of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures in recording transactions, the accounting cycle, the accrual basis of accounting, the preparation of classified statements and internal control procedures as they relate to sole proprietorships. The accounting cycle is completed both manually and by computer. CJ-101 - Introduction to Criminal Justice A comprehensive examination of the American Criminal Justice System and its components, including the duties of the police, courts, corrections, and the legislative and executive branches of government at the state and federal levels. Topics include the responsibilities of the System in American society, the purpose, organization, structure and limitations of the criminal law, definitions of specific crimes, the organization of the court system, and the processing of criminal cases through the police, arrest, prosecutorial review, and various judicial stages including plea bargaining, trial, adjudication, and appeal. The Juvenile Justice System will be addressed. Both the federal and state Constitutional rights of the accused and the roles of key players in the judicial process will be considered. The organization of the police and the correctional system will be examined. CJ-150 - American Legal System This course examines the history, structure, organization, and authorities of the legal systems of justice used in the United States, including the civil, criminal, and juvenile systems. Topics will include the evolution of law, legal education and legal reasoning, jurisdictional issues, the appellate process and judicial review, the civil and criminal judicial process, and contemporary juvenile justice CJ-200 - Criminal Law An introduction to the history, theory, and practice of the substantive criminal law, this course examines the sources of law, legislative responsibilities, the major elements of statutory offenses, and their application in the Criminal Justice Process. New York State Penal Code will be emphasized. *Prerequisite CJ – 101 IT-150 - Web Design Technology This course introduces the student to Web page design. The importance of careful planning as the key to a successful Web site will be discussed. Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML) will be introduced and students will create Web pages to include text, images, hyperlink, lists, tables, frames, and forms using an HTML editor. Topics on formatting a Web page and refining a Web site will be covered. Students will also be introduced to Dynamic HTML (DHTML), a scripting language used to control the behavior of objects on a Web page. IT-100 - Introduction to Information Technology This course is intended for students interested in pursuing a career in the field of Information Technology. Topics include an overview of the fundamentals of information technology, specializations and career paths, current and emerging technologies, business applications, communications and decision making, and the impact of these systems on business, government, and society. This course will also emphasize the development of both writing and speaking skills through application of the concepts that define the course. Windows and popular software packages for word processing, spreadsheet development, presentations and Internet concepts are also introduced. PH-120 – Film and Public Health This course critically explores public health issues as they are portrayed in popular films and discusses the scientific, social, ethical and political implications of the issues portrayed in these movies. Topics that will be covered include environmental health and infectious disease issues, disease outbreaks, occupational and environmental poisonings and toxicity, epidemics as well as disease clusters and issues of aging. The health issue portrayed in the feature will be covered in class in order to allow students to evaluate the medical accuracy as it is presented in the movie. To facilitate an analytic perspective on the public health issues and their cinematic presentation, students will be provided with an outline of questions to consider regarding the film and the issues that were raised. HA-106 - Introduction to Contemporary Health Issues An introductory study of the health issues facing communities in the United States. This course will increase student knowledge about basic health information, the wellness concept, healthy lifestyle choices and accepting personal responsibility for achieving optimal health. Areas of emphasis include controlling stress, mental health, nutrition, substance use and abuse, infectious and noninfectious diseases, environmental and consumer health issues. HC-160 – Emergency Medical Applications This course is designed to introduce to the basic principles of emergency first aid and CPR. The course will examine the major body systems and the common emergency illnesses and injuries associated with each. Students will learn to identity symptoms and apply the appropriate emergency treatments and stabilization techniques. The course emphasizes practical application of the skills learned, and leads to First Aid/CPR certification upon successful and timely completion of requirements. HP-101 - Introduction to Hospitality This course provides a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of lodging, food & beverage, tourism, gaming, conventions and recreation & leisure operations. A study of the growth and development of the hospitality industry and basic managerial and operating activities is entailed. ED-101 - Foundations of Education This course is an introduction to the history of education in the United States including major theorists who have influenced American education. Students will explore the concepts, laws, and regulations of the teaching profession in general and special needs education for early childhood through adolescent education. Students will gain an understanding of learning and behavioral disabilities, within the foundation of education, from historical, legal, and social constructs. LA-120 – Speech Communication This course covers the fundamentals of verbal communication - audience, message, and channel. Topics include interpersonal interaction, small group communication, and formal speech delivery. Students research, organize and present speeches to the class several times. MG-101 - Introduction to Business This introductory course examines the nature, form and structure of business organizations and fundamental business operations such as finance, human resources, information systems, marketing and production of goods and services. MK-101 – Marketing An introductory course that examines marketing functions and policies, consumer exchange behavior, product and product development, product life cycle, distribution channels, exporting and trade movement, standardization and grading, pricing principles, policies, and practices, government regulation, sales promotion, and management principles and practices. BL-101 - Business Law I Introductory course designed to provide an understanding of the substantive law, procedural law and principles of the law of contracts, public policy and consumer protection under the Uniform Commercial Code. Students are urged to complete EN-109 prior to enrolling in this course.
