Pre AP World History Class Schedule 8/31-9/3 Reminders: The Animal Farm Test will be TUESDAY, 9/7…that’s definite now. You may bring any handwritten notes you took on the book to class and use them on the test. You must STAPLE THEM TO YOUR TEST WHEN YOU TURN IT IN!! Remember no school on Monday, 9/6 Make sure you are defining vocabulary as you take notes in class and in the readings—highlight the words in your notes so that when you are reviewing your notes you also review vocabulary. Monday 8/30: Essential Question for Discussion: How and why do cultures change? Reading: No new readings review your notes! Tuesday 8/31: TEST-Unit I The test will have about 15-20 multiple choice questions and 5 discussion/short answer questions. You should be reviewing your notes each night—DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO STUDY. Wednesday 9/1: GO OVER THE TEST: UNIT I—I consider going over the test a very important lesson for several reasons, first you will NEVER be able to take a copy of the test home with you. This is your chance to look at your answers, see what you got correct and what you missed and examine WHY—so you will be more successful on future tests. Also since the exam is cumulative you need to recognize why you missed something so if you see a similar question in the future you will not miss it. Really pay attention when we go over the test!!!! We will also talk about what you should have written for the discussion questions—this should give you a feel for how you did on the test—it may take me a while to grade them. Reading: Read Animal Farm—be ready for the Animal Farm test on Tuesday, 9/7 when you get back from Labor Day break! You may bring any handwritten notes you take while you read to class and use them on the test. Thursday 9/2-Friday 9/3: Map Work—Northern and Central Eurasia Reading: Read the typed notes on the physical geography of Northern Eurasia before you come to class on Thursday Continue to read Animal Farm—take notes if you want to use them on the test! Also—make sure you are learning as you go…you don’t want to end up cramming at the end of the unit!!! It is looking like the vocabulary quiz will be on Friday, 10/1—highlight the vocabulary in your notes and study 15-20 minutes each night by reading over your notes…. and the test will be the following week on Tuesday, 10/5—review, review, review nightly. Reading in text for class on Wednesday: p. 736-738: Review (you have already read this) “Marxism: Radical Socialism.” Don’t worry about the chart on p. 737 and stop at “Labor Unions and Reform Laws” on p. 738. Then read p. 867-869 stop at “The March Revolution”. TAKE NOTES paying special attention to vocabulary and anything related to the SPRITE themes (you should keep the sheet with the themes and related questions out while you read. See if you find any answers to the questions in the reading.) BE PREPARED FOR A POSSIBLE READING QUIZ—every time you have a reading assignment a reading quiz is possible. Each six-week grading period will include a reading quiz grade. This grade is based on performance on unannounced quizzes drawn from nightly reading assignments. The quizzes given during each six week grading period are averaged together for the grade—if you miss one your average will come from fewer quizzes than you classmates (another words you do not make up reading quizzes). Students may use their own thematic notes from the reading assignment on all reading quizzes. Thursday 9/9: Essential Question for Discussion: What led to the fall of the Czar of Russia? Reading in text: Pages 869-873 (start at “The March Revolution” to end of the section). Again…focus on vocabulary and SPRITE themes—any changes here? Review your notes! Friday 9/10: Essential Question for Discussion: Reading in text: no new reading—review your notes and vocabulary! Reading in text: pages 873-881 (start at “Stalin Becomes Dictator” and read to end of 881—yes look at the pictures on 880-881 and read the captions) Begin a new set of thematic SPRITE notes on “Life in the Soviet Union”. For this reading concentrate on what social, political, religious, intellectual and economic life was like in the Soviet Union during Stalin. Don’t forget to review past notes! Tuesday 9/14: Essential Question for Discussion: Reading in text: no new reading—review your notes and vocabulary! Wednesday 9/15: Essential Question for Discussion: What was the Cold War and how was it “fought”? Reading in text for class on Tuesday: Chapter 33.1 pages 965-971 Almost all of your notes from here to the end of the unit will be under the political theme—just take notes on the information in the reading focusing on vocabulary. Review past notes and vocabulary. Make sure you are prepared for a possible reading quiz—remember you may use your own thematic notes from the reading assignment on all reading quizzes. Thursday 9/16: Map Quiz—physical and political geography of Northern and Central Eurasia Reading in Text: no new reading review notes and vocabulary Friday 9/17 Essential Question for Discussion: Reading in Text: no new reading—review, review, review A guidance counselor will be coming in for the period to present information to the class. We will pick up where we left off on Wednesday when we get back from break. Reading in Text: Chapter pages 33. 4 pages 982-985 (yes—read “History in Depth” on page 983) add to your SPRITE notes—review past notes! Wednesday 9/29: Essential Question for Discussion: What was détente? Reading in Text: Chapter 33.5 pages 988-991 and then read Chapter 33.4 page 987 “The Superpowers face off in Afghanistan” add to your SPRITE notes and define vocabulary Thursday 9/30: Essential Question for Discussion: How did Gorbachev’s reforms bring about the end of the Cold War? Reading in Text: Chapter 35.3 pages 1046-1050 (stop at “Russia Under Yeltsin”) continue to add to your SPRITE notes and review your notes and vocabulary Friday 10/1: Vocabulary QUIZ Unit II: study your notes with vocabulary highlighted in them. Any vocab term that you have read about in the text or we have talked about in class is fair game!! You should have been learning the words all along!!! Tuesday 10/5: TEST UNIT II: The Cold War—study as you go along—don’t wait until the last minute to study!! Wednesday 10/6: We will go over the Unit II test Thursday 10/7-Friday 10/8: Map Work: Sub-Saharan Africa Essential Question for Discussion: How has geography impacted the development of Sub-Saharan Africa? Reading: Read the physical geography notes on Sub-Saharan Africa Overall—you don’t have much reading to do for homework this week—enjoy it while it lasts!
