Tax Parcel / Other No. Municipality Historic / Other Name 62-2-41 Kennett Township Nolan, John House PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (page 1): This property is located in the northeast part of Kennett Township, just south of the village of Hamorton. The 4.7-acre property has an irregular shape with access off Kennett Pike (which forms the northeast boundary) and Hillendale Road to the south. A long drive leads southwest from Kennett Pike to the center of the property. Buildings here include a Ranch house, the John Nolan House, and a nonhistoric block building. East of the John Nolan House are the stone foundation ruins of a former outbuilding. The John Nolan House is a 2-part building with an unusual configuration, as it faces north rather than south. The older section is a 2-story, 3-bay frame building with a large front porch on the north elevation and a bay window on the east end; the east addition is a 1-story wing extension. Key features of the house include the fenestration, bay and porch of the core. Unfortunately it is highly altered and thus Class 3. 1. Core: the 2-story, 3-bay vernacular frame building facing north. a. Roof: End-gabled, clad with asphalt shingles. A large square brick chimney is attached to the south elevation near the center. b. Walls: Frame, clad with aluminum siding. Fenestration is generally symmetrical. Windows are mostly 6x6 double hung sash units. i. Main (north) elevation: the first and second floors have three bays not aligned vertically. The second floor has a door in the east bay opening onto the upper level of the porch and two windows to the west. The first floor has three 6x6 windows; it appears that the historic entrance was located in the wide expanse between the east and center windows. ii. Front Porch: a 2-story frame element on the north elevation of the core. It has a nearly flat roof with a shed profile. On the balcony-like upper level, three posts support the ends of the roof. The platform of the upper level is supported by three braced square posts. The porch is wide enough to drive an automobile through it. iii. East elevation: the end wall facing the Ranch house. It is mostly obscured by additions. A rectangular attic louver is located in the peak of the gable. The second floor has a 6x6 window in the south bay. The north bay is occupied by a 5-panel bay window with a 6x6 window on the center three panels. The lower level of the bay is located inside the east wing. iv. South elevation: two bays on each floor, divided by the attached chimney. The second floor has a paired 6x6 window in the east bay over a single 6x6 on the first floor; the west bay was not visible due to vegetation. c. Foundation: stone PENNSYLVANIA HISTORICAL RESOURCE SURVEY FORM – NARRATIVE SHEET 89C Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Bureau for Historic Preservation Survey Code County Address 124 Chester 029 288 Kennett Pk. Tax Parcel / Other No. Municipality Historic / Other Name 62-2-41 Kennett Township Nolan, John House PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (page 2): 2. East Wing: the 1-story, 1-bay extension off the Core’s east end wall. Its gabled roof is clad with asphalt shingles and features simple boxed eaves. The frame walls are clad with aluminum siding. The main (east) end wall has a small 6-light attic window over the large overhead garage door with four sets of 6-light windows. The two side walls feature two 6x6 windows, arranged symmetrically. The section’s foundation is concrete. The Ranch House is a 1-story, 4-bay building located east of the John Nolan house. Its endgabled roof is clad with asphalt shingles. The walls are aluminum. On the main (south) elevation, the western two bays have a double hung sash window flanked by inoperable shutters; a modern door is in the third bay, and a four-part bay window with undersized (and inoperable) shutters is in the east bay. The east end has two windows. The building’s foundation is concrete.
