Tax Parcel / Other No. Municipality Historic / Other Name 62-4-53 Kennett Township Italian American Club PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (page 1): This property is located in the northwest part of Kennett Township, ½ mile east of the Borough of Kennett Square. The 3.2-acre property spans both sides of Ways Lane, a road leading south from Baltimore Pike, passing through this property, and continuing south and then west into Kennett Square. The property is mostly cleared and drains to the south. Two historic buildings are located here: the original Italian American Club (built 1922), and the new Italian American Club (built 1949). The two buildings face each other across the road, but they are on the same tax parcel. The 1922 Clubhouse is located on the west side of the road. It is a 1-story building elevated off grade to accommodate a full basement. The building faces east and has a rear addition. The building is currently used a Boy Scout headquarters (Troop #53). Key features of the building include its hipped roof, brick lintels, and elevated entrance. 1. Core: the east portion of the building. It is a rectangular section with the formal entrance on the narrow end facing east onto the road. a. Roof: hipped profile, clad with asphalt shingles. The eaves are supported by exposed rafter tails and clad with beadboard. b. Walls: stuccoed. Fenestration is symmetrical. Windows are large 1x1 plate glass windows (possibly original), with rowlock lintels. The main (east) elevation has a centered, double door flanked by windows. The door opens onto a stoop with steps leading down north and south to grade behind a parapet wall. The north and south elevations feature three sets of paired windows spaced symmetrically on the main floor. c. Foundation: stuccoed. The south elevation has a centered, gabled entrance leading into the basement between large sealed windows with a rowlock lintel. The north elevation has a small utility addition flanked by large sealed windows with rowlock lintels. 2. Rear Addition: a 1-story section on the west end of the core. It has a gabled roof clad with asphalt shingles and featuring exposed rafter tails. A brick chimney is attached onto the west wall. The walls of the section are stuccoed. Windows are small 1x1 units, some of which have been sealed. A door on the west elevation opens onto a frame set of stairs leading down to the north to grade. The foundation is expressed as a watertable; windows originally lighting the basement have been sealed on the north and south elevations. Tax Parcel / Other No. Municipality Historic / Other Name 62-4-53 Kennett Township Italian American Club PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (page 2): The 1949 Clubhouse is located on the east side of the road. It is a large L-shaped building, with one extension facing north onto the parking lot and one facing west onto the road. It appears that the building was originally just the north section, with the south portion constructed later. Key features of the building include its glass block windows and entrance on the west elevation. 1. North Section: what appears to be the core. It is a 1-story, 6-bay section. It has a hipped roof clad with asphalt shingles. The walls are polychrome stone of a light brown color. Fenestration is symmetrical; windows are glass block units with 56 lights. The north elevation has four such windows and two doors. The west elevation, facing the road, has three windows. The building’s datestone is located in the northwest corner, on the west elevation. The foundation is concrete. 2. South Section: the 1-story, 7-bay section on the south elevation of the North Section. It has a hipped roof with a slightly lower ridge than the north section. The walls are comprised of similar light brown polychrome stone. The main (west) elevation has a formal entrance in the north bay that is the current primary entrance. As built, the entrance was a rectangular element with an ornamental 1949 at the top of a large decorative frame around the recessed door; an extended canopy partially covers the original formal entrance. South of the entrance are five large multi-light windows with glass block panes, a service entrance, and a small window. The foundation is concrete.
