Fair is foul, and foul is fair.
--Witches, Act I,
scene i

--Banquo, Act I, scene
iii
--Lady Macbeth,
Act I,scene v
And oftentimes, to win us to our harm,
The instruments of darkness tell us truths,
Win us with honest trifles, to betray us
In deepest consequence.
Glamis thou art, and Cawdor; and shalt be
What thou art promised. Yet do I fear thy nature;
It is too full o' the milk of human kindness
To catch the nearest way: thou wouldst be great;
Art not without ambition; but without
The illness should attend it.
--Macbeth, Act I, scene
vii
I have no spur
To prick the sides of my intent, but only
Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself
And falls on the other.
--Macbeth, Act II,
scene i
Is this a dagger which I see before me,
The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch
thee;
I have thee not, and yet I see thee still.
Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible
To feeling as to sight? or art thou but
A dagger of the mind, a false creation,
Proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain?
I see thee yet, in form as palpable
As this which now I draw.
12
--Lady Macbeth, Act
III, scene ii
Nought's had, all's spent
Where our desire is got without content.
'Tis safer to be that which we destroy
Than, by destruction, dwell in doubtful joy.
--Macbeth, Act III,
scene ii
Cancel and tear to pieces that great bond
Which keeps me pale! Light thickens, and the
crow
Makes wing to the rooky wood;
Good things of day begin to droop and drowse,
Whiles night's black agents to their preys do rouse.
--Macbeth, Act III,
scene iv
Thou canst not say I did it; never shake
Thy gory locks at me.
--Macbeth, Act III,
scene iv
 am in blood
Stepp'd in so far, that, should I wade no more,
Returning were as tedious as go o'er.
13
--Angus, Act V,
scene ii
--Macbeth, Act V,
scene v
--Macbeth, Act V,
scene viii
Those he commands move only in command,
Nothing in love: now does he feel his title
Hang loose about him, like a giant's robe
Upon a dwarfish thief.
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
Lay on, Macduff,
And damned be him that first cries, 'Hold,
enough!'

Create the set: (7 points)
In the space provided, create a set for one of
the scenes. List the Act:______:Scene______

ASSIGN THE BLAME: (10 points)
There are two ‘pies” below. You will divide each “pie” proportionally to the amount of
blame you assign to Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and the Witches for the murder of a
character. No other characters can share the blame. For example, if you believe that the
Witches, Macbeth, and Lady Macbeth equally share the blame for the death of Duncan, you
should divide the pie equally into thirds. If you believe that Lady Macbeth holds a larger
share of the blame, then your “pie” should illustrate her as having a larger share.
After you have assigned the blame for the death of Duncan, you must assign the blame for
the death of Banquo.
Once you have completed both “pies” and assigned the blame, you need to develop an essay
explaining WHY you have divided each pie in assigning responsibility for the murders.
To prepare for the essays, look at the two pies. What differences do you note? What reasons
can you give for the differences? What has happened to the characters that may have
influenced your assignment of blame?
The Death of DUNCAN
The Death of BANQUO
16
PIE CHART ESSAY: (20 points)
This is an essay explaining WHY you have divided each pie in assigning responsibility for
the murders. You must have EVIDENCE (citations from the text) to support your decision.
You must analyze how the events of the play have, or have not, influenced the characters of
Lady Macbeth, Macbeth, and the Witches.
