ROWAN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND EXERCISE SCIENCE
HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Teacher: Michael Wasienko
Lesson # _1__ of _4__
Grade Level: _6__

Unit Title: Fitness
Lesson Title: Flexibility
Duration of class: 42 minutes

SECTION A. (Overview)
Rationale (Relevance of Lesson to Unit): Flexibility is a component of fitness that
should be taught at a young age and continue throughout one’s life. Stretching
allows our muscle’s to loosen up when tight and makes us more mobile. Flexibility
prevents injury, improves posture, and makes cardio activities a lot easier. During
this activity students will learn the main stretches for the hamstring muscle and then
later perform these stretches in a paused position after being tug in our freeze tag
game.
Anticipated difficulties and how they will be addressed:
Weather and gym availability: Due to inclement weather, the lesson may be
moved inside. Other physical education classes will most likely be inside which
will create a packed gym and there will be less room to do our activity for the day.
Adjustments will have to be made by creating a smaller space or bringing all of
the classes together to play.
Each student is different: Positivity will only be tolerated. Every student is at a
different level of flexibility and understanding of how to perform the stretch.
Students will refrain from all negative comments and most importantly have fun.
It is a time to be with friends while improving your fitness.
Attentiveness from each student: At age 11 and 12 there has to be an
understanding that students are ready to run around like crazy after sitting in
class all day. Rules and a strong voice to keep students focused are necessary.
Students must be aware of the activity and the different rules in order to have a
fun, safe environment.
Equipment and Materials:
- Cones to mark where the boundaries are
- 26 check lists for five main stretches

Learning Outcome
CPI #
Student Assessment
Psychomotor: students will be able to learn
proper stretches and techniques for their
hamstrings
2.6.6.A.6 Self assessment- Students will
be able to fill out their own self
check list
Cognitive: students will be able to explain
the 3 components of why stretching is
important
2.6.6.A.6 Self Assessment-Students will
2.6.6.A.2 be able to write down 3
reasons why stretching is
important
Affective: students will be able to enjoy and
perform new stretches that will better their
flexibility for their hamstrings
2.6.6.A.1 I will observe and record the
students properly executing
the correct hamstring stretches

Warm-up: I will have the students jog up and back. Then have every student
watch me perform one of the five hamstring stretches first, then have all of the
students repeat each stretch after watching me. The focus of today will be
stretching out our hamstrings and staying loose.

Introductory Activities: What is flexibility and why is it important to maintain
flexibility and continue to stretch throughout your whole entire life? Does
flexibility make other activities easier?
Learning Focus Activities:
-
I will introduce our freeze tag game to the students. When students are
tug, they must perform one of the five hamstring stretches before one of
their teammates can unfreeze them.
-
Then I will pick every other student and create two teams of 13. Who is
chasing and who is being tug.
-
I will then show the students what the boundaries are. We will switch
who is chasing and who is tagging half way through.
-
There will be no pushing or arguing. I am the judge, and if you didn’t do
the stretch then you must stay frozen.
Culminating Activity:
At the end of the learning focus activity the class will line up and complete all
five stretches after all of the running that has just occurred.
We will then begin our closing discussion.

min.
Closure: Review why it is important to stay flexible. Ask the students if they felt
loose by performing stretches and running around during tag. Then pass out a
worksheet that has pictures of each stretch and have the students take it home
and put a check mark next to their favorite stretches. Tell the class they did a
very nice job today.
