2015 Smoky Mountain APIC Speaker Bios
Deana Samms, BS, MS, CIC Ms. Samms is an Infection Preventionist at the Charleston Area
Medical Center in Charleston, WV. She has 19 years’ experience in Infection Prevention and 11
years in Microbiology. She has been a CIC since 1998. She is active in APIC-WV and has
presented at both APIC-WV and National APIC.
Katie Garman, MPH Ms. Garman is the Director of Enteric Disease Surveillance and Outbreak
Investigations at the Tennessee Department of Health. She is the coordinator of Tennessee’s
FoodNET, FoodCORE and Integrated Food Safety Centers of Excellence.
Vicki Brinkso, RN, MSN, CIC Ms. Brinsko is an Infection Preventionist with Vanderbilt
University in Nashville, TN. She is the author of numerous IP publications and a former member
of CDC’s Hospital Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC).
Sara Dodson, MT (ASCP), CIC Mrs. Dodson is an Infection Preventionist at Parkwest
Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. She has 15 years of laboratory experience, including 5 years as
a Microbiology Technical Specialist prior to becoming an IP. She currently serves as the Joint
Commission Chair for the IP chapter for her facility and as a member of the Covenant Health
HLD/Sterilization Improvement Team. She has been CIC since 2011. She is an active member of
APIC and is the current Treasurer of the Smoky Mountain APIC Chapter.
Donna McLaughlin Ms. McLaughlin is the Sterile Processing Manager at Fort Sanders Regional
Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. She is a member of AAMI, IAHC SMM, 3M Sterilization
Advisory Council and is the current President of the Tennessee Association of Central Service
Processing Services. She has authored and co-authored several articles related to Sterile
Processing and is the current President of the TN Chapter of IAHCSMM.
Lance Peterson, MD, FASCP, FIDSA, FAAM, FSHEA Dr. Peterson is the Director of
Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Research, Vice-Chair of Pathology for Research and
Epidemiologist at NorthShore University Health System in Evanston, IL. He is certified in Internal
Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology. He has over 700 scientific publications
and is recognized in the 21st Century Edition of Marquis’ Who’s Who.
Patti Grant, RN, BSN, MS, CIC Ms.Grant has been an Infection Preventionist for 25 years in
hospitals ranging from 1000-bed University-Teaching Level I trauma centers to small for-profit
acute care community facilities. She has been CIC certified since 1992. She was APIC President in
2013.
Nyempu Karmue-Hall, RN Ms. Karmue-Hall has been an RN since 2002. She currently
works on the Medical Surgical Unit at James H. Quillen Veterans’ Health Administration. From
December 2014 until February 2015, she worked as an Ebola Response Nurse at an Ebola
treatment unit in Liberia, West Africa. She is an online student at King University earning her
Masters as a Nurse Educator.
Marion Kainer, MD, MPH, FRACP Dr. Kainer is the Director, Healthcare Associated
Infections & Antimicrobial Resistance, at the Tennessee Department of Health. She is a
sought after speaker and is an invaluable resource to Infection Preventionists in the state of
Tennessee.
