DC Circuits Lab
Remember to answer in complete sentences.
Background:
Please explain Kirkoff's Laws.
Verification of Ohm’s Law
Find the circuit diagram in section 1.1 of the lab manual. What is the ratio of channel-1
voltage to channel-2 voltage? If you were to measure channel-1 voltage against channel2 voltage what would the slope be?
You plotted channel-0 voltage against channel-1. What was the slope that you measured?
What was the ratio of the resistances you measured in this circuit? How well do your two
measured values compare (think percent error)?
Please explain how these measurements verify Ohm’s law.
Diodes
Please explain how Zener and Schottky diodes have the V vs. I (remember this is x vs. y)
characteristics seen in the figures in your lab manual.
Transistors
Please explain what transistors are used for in circuits. What was used before transistors?
Resistance Change with Temperature
Please explain what your plot of this measurement means. You measured the ratio of two
resistors. Was the light resistor in the numerator or denominator? How does the
resistance change with temperature? Please think of a reason why and explain it clearly.
Conductivity
What is the difference between resistivity and resistance? Please explain using equations.
How is the current density related to the conductivity? How is the conductivity related to
the electric field and current density (current per unit area)? How is the resistivity related
to the conductivity? In two dimensions try to figure out how the resistance and resistivity
are related.
What did you measure for the resistivity of copper? How does this compared to a value
(a reliable value) you found online. Please record your resistivity is micro-ohm
centimeters.
Infinite Number of Resistors
Derive the expression for this particular chain of resistors. Assume it extends to infinity
(look up how to do it online if you are unsure).
Qualitatively explain if your theory matches with the experiment.
