and the minerals Iron and
Calcium pupils will be able
describe sources, why we need
them to stay healthy and the
associated deficiency diseases.
Literacy: Note making
Internet research:
Images and information
to produce leaflets for
their folders on Vitamins
C and D, Proten, Iron and
Calcium. They must
provide info on Causes of
deficiency, symptoms and
ways in which the
deficiency can be
prevented.
ICT
Communication
Being creative
Self management:
Organise and plan how to
go about a task.
Focus, sustain attention
and persist with a task.
Managing Information:
Use own and other’s ideas
to locate sources of
information.

Skills
3/4 Periods
Printout of one leaflet will be
assessed.
Investigating which fruit
drinks contain the most
Vitamin C.
3 Periods
Pupils will plan and carry out an
investigation using DCPIP and 5
different fruit juices to find
out which contains the most
Vit C. They will produce a plan,
table of results and conclusion
on the work sheets provided.
Literacy: Writing a report.
Pupils will use the
information provided as a
guide to their plans.
Teachers may wish to
demo the use of DCPIP
and clarify how the fewer
drops required indicates
more Vit C.
Practical will be carried
out in groups.
Problem solving/ decision
making:
Planning a fair test
Self management:

and persist with a task.
Working with others:
Develop routines of turn
taking, sharing and
cooperating
Communication
Write up of plan and
conclusion.
Classroom discussion
using information sheets
in handout.
Label a diagram of the
heart. Indicate with
arrows the direction of
blood flow in the heart.
Indicate the direction of
blood flow in a simple plan
of the circulatory system.
Managing information
Heart Dissection
Working with others.
Develop routines of turn
taking, sharing and
cooperating.
Manipulative skills of
dissection.
Following instructions
Numeracy: Drawing a bar chart
to illustrate results.
How does my heart work?
Pupils will be able to:
label a diagram of the heart
to include the chambers,
valves and blood vessels;
indicate direction of blood
flow in the heart, to the lungs
and major organs; describe
the role of blood in transport
of materials- delivery of food
and oxygen from intestines
and lungs to working cells and
the removal of CO2 and waste
from cells to lungs, kidney etc.
Completed report to show
plan, results and
conclusion.
Pupil self evaluation sheet
completed after teacher has
corrected their
Investigation.
