Pupils should be aware of the general health problems caused by a poor diet in this country and in third world countries. Brain Storm Summarising information For Vitamins C and D, protein and the minerals Iron and Calcium pupils will be able describe sources, why we need them to stay healthy and the associated deficiency diseases. Literacy: Note making Internet research: Images and information to produce leaflets for their folders on Vitamins C and D, Proten, Iron and Calcium. They must provide info on Causes of deficiency, symptoms and ways in which the deficiency can be prevented. ICT Communication Being creative Self management: Organise and plan how to go about a task. Assessment Opportunities / ICT Skills 3/4 Periods Printout of one leaflet will be assessed. Investigating which fruit drinks contain the most Vitamin C. 3 Periods Pupils will plan and carry out an investigation using DCPIP and 5 different fruit juices to find out which contains the most Vit C. They will produce a plan, table of results and conclusion on the work sheets provided. Literacy: Writing a report. Pupils will use the information provided as a guide to their plans. Teachers may wish to demo the use of DCPIP and clarify how the fewer drops required indicates more Vit C. Practical will be carried out in groups. Write about the journey of a red blood cell/draw up an itinerary of the ‘Body Tour of the Circulatory system. Group work Being creative: The pupils become the blood in the system. Homework: My Journey of the body as a red blood cell. Summarising information gained throughout the thematic approach. Design a Snakes and ladders board game. To go up a ladder you must land on a square which has an activity to improve health. A square with a snakes head must include an activity which is harmful to your health.
