PLATE TECTONICS AND THE EARTH’S INTERIOR
Objective- To determine the relationship between the Earth’s interior and plate tectonics.
Introduction- The theory of continental drift as developed by Alfred Wegner, has been expanded on is now
commonly referred to plate tectonics. What Wegner could not understand is the mechanism, which caused the
continents/plates to move. We now know the asthenosphere in which the crust is resting on is moving.
Depending on the flow of rock below the crust dictates the direction in which the plates move.
Procedure- Use the Map provided by your teacher along with your ESRT’s page 5 and 10 to answer the
questions.
Conclusion- Below, in complete sentences, write a concluding paragraph along with simple diagrams that show
the earth’s surface and mantle layers which cause the various plate boundaries. (Divergent, Convergent O-O,
Convergent O-C, Convergent C-C, and Transform boundaries.) (O- Ocean, C- Continent).

Questions: Using the Plate Tectonic Maps and your ESRT answer these questions:
1) Name the three largest plates?
2) What are the yellow dots and arrows referring to on the National Geographic map?
3) In which direction and velocity is the Pacific Plate moving?
4) The Red Ring surrounding the Pacific Ocean is called the Ring of Fire, name several of the trenches
which surround the Ring of Fire.
5) Which features are commonly found along the plate boundaries?
6) Locate the Red Sea which is the body of water just south of Cairo, Egypt. Which type of plate boundary
is located there? Is the Red Sea growing or shrinking? Explain.
7) What two plates are forming the Himalaya Mountain range?
8) Which type of plate boundary is this and is it continent-continent, ocean-continent, ocean-oceean?
9) The Mariana Trench is the location of the deepest spot in the world, which two plates are making the
Mariana Trench. Draw a picture of the two plates, which could explain why the ocean in so deep here.
10) Which type of plate boundary is located between San Francisco and Los Angeles?
11) What surface feature (brown) was formed by the Nazca plate subducting below the South American
Plate?
Using the pictures below, answer the following questions.
Which type of boundary is represented by diagrams A, B, C and D?

For these question please answer with A, B, C or D
16. Which diagram represents the cross section at 10°S, 110° W?
17. Which diagram represents the cross section at 35°N 120° E?
18. Which diagram represents the cross section in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean?
19. Which diagram represents the cross section where the Indian Plate and Eurasian Plate meet?
20. Which diagram represents the cross section of the East side of the Nazca Plate?
21. Which diagram represents the cross section of the West side of the Nazca Plate?
