Introduction: You will construct a map of East Asia using the maps and information on
pages 105, 107, 122, 128, 135, 152, 157, 516, 517 in your textbook. You may also use the
classroom atlases p 152-169 to complete the assignment. You will also be using the
computers both in the classroom and at home, if necessary, to answer the questions that
may need further research. There will be no point deductions for artistic quality, but as
always, try to be as neat as possible when creating your map.
1. Lightly shade in with blue the outline of all the major bodies of water. (2 points)
Label the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator in blue.
2. Label all the countries in Asia that are located within the map coordinates in
black ink. Remember to label all countries in capital letters. (30 points) Use
abbreviations.

6. Color pink the only country on the map whose boundaries extend into Europe. (2

7. Color the country orange that is made up of four main islands and 4000 smaller
islands, it is also known as an archipelago or chain of islands and is located about
100 miles off the east coast of the Asian mainland. (3 points)
8. Draw purple arrows to show the direction that the wind blows bringing moist air
which brings rain to many Asian countries. Draw yellow arrows to show the
direction that the wind blows bring cool dry air to many Asian countries.

9. Religion also plays a key role in shaping the culture of a country. Color brown
the entire country that saw the origins of Buddhism, one of the most widespread
religions in the world. Then put diagonal brown lines in the three areas
(countries) where Buddhism spread to in the 300’s AD. (5 points)
10. Elevation can play a key part in determining a location’s culture. Color red the
country Mt. Everest (the highest mountain in the world) is located in and mark
(don’t label) Mt. Everest with a black triangle. (2 points)
11. Walls are built with one of two purposes, either to keep people in or keep people
out. The Great Wall is one of the largest construction projects ever completed.
During the Ming Dynasty, it would stretch over 4,000 miles long. Locate the
approximate location of the Great Wall by marking it with a solid black line and
labeling it on your map.

12. Throughout history, kingdoms have either grown in size, lost land to rivals, or
have disappeared altogether. With a black marker, or pencil outline the
boundary of the Qin Empire around 210 B.C. then shade that area yellow, then
show the outline of the Han Empire around 200 A.D in black also. (5 points)
13. Trade was difficult to accomplish due to the landforms in Asia. With a red
pencil, draw a dashed line to show the Silk Road trade routes from China to the
Mediterranean Sea. (4 points)
14. With a dark green outline, show what the Maurya Empire looked like in the year
around 250 B.C. (2 points)
15. Color all the remaining countries a neutral color (grey). Try to pick a color that is
different from the ones you have used. (2 points)
