Event Background CII ‘s vision of increasing manufacturing contribution to 25% of GDP by 2025 which would in turn create 100 mn jobs would be easy, if the Chemical sector, which is considered as a building block of the economy can grow at 18% per annum. Ministry of Chemicals & Petrochemicals has set up a Task force for setting the vision for 2020 for the sector, by attracting investment among other factors. CII National Committee on Chemicals has decided to focus on Specialty Chemicals area which is expected to witness a sustained growth considering the inherent strengths possessed by the Industry in India, namely strong process engineering capabilities, low manufacturing costs and understanding of the knowledge intensive process. The opportunity for India and the specialty chemicals sector is large and realizable. In the next 10 years, a large share of the USD 1 trillion global specialty chemicals industry could move to Asia. India is well positioned to capture this opportunity owing to strong fundamentals. Moreover, there is a large export opportunity, and the potential to employ an additional 0.7 million to 0.8 million people directly and many more indirectly. However, there will be several challenges in capturing this opportunity. Both the Indian government and the industry will need to act together to implement a range of initiatives to attract investments and support growth. The CII National Committee on Chemicals has a belief that USD 100 billion Specialty Chemical sector could be built in India by 2020 and hence it would be important to identify the areas of opportunities, challenges and the action points for all stakeholders. McKinsey & Company, the global management consulting firm, steering this study feel that the domestic demand of 70% would lead the investment in this sector, with the balance 30% being focused on exports. With this background, CII National Committee on Chemicals, is planning to have a half day Seminar cum Interactive Session to deliberate upon the opportunities of growth in few user segment within the Specialty Chemical space, i.e Construction, Auto mobile, auto component , Consumer electronics , Plastics, Personal & Home Care.
