Event Background
CII ‘s vision of increasing manufacturing contribution to 25% of GDP by 2025
which would in turn create 100 mn jobs would be easy, if the Chemical sector,
which is considered as a building block of the economy can grow at 18% per
annum. Ministry of Chemicals & Petrochemicals has set up a Task force for
setting the vision for 2020 for the sector, by attracting investment among other
factors.
CII National Committee on Chemicals has decided to focus on Specialty
Chemicals area which is expected to witness a sustained growth considering the
inherent strengths possessed by the Industry in India, namely strong process
engineering capabilities, low manufacturing costs and understanding of the
knowledge intensive process.
The opportunity for India and the specialty chemicals sector is large and
realizable. In the next 10 years, a large share of the USD 1 trillion global
specialty chemicals industry could move to Asia. India is well positioned to
capture this opportunity owing to strong fundamentals. Moreover, there is a large
export opportunity, and the potential to employ an additional 0.7 million to 0.8
million people directly and many more indirectly.
However, there will be several challenges in capturing this opportunity. Both the
Indian government and the industry will need to act together to implement a
range of initiatives to attract investments and support growth.
The CII National Committee on Chemicals has a belief that USD 100 billion
Specialty Chemical sector could be built in India by 2020 and hence it would be
important to identify the areas of opportunities, challenges and the action points
for all stakeholders. McKinsey & Company, the global management consulting
firm, steering this study feel that the domestic demand of 70% would lead the
investment in this sector, with the balance 30% being focused on exports.
With this background, CII National Committee on Chemicals, is planning to
have a half day Seminar cum Interactive Session to deliberate upon the
opportunities of growth in few user segment within the Specialty Chemical
space, i.e Construction, Auto mobile, auto component , Consumer
electronics , Plastics, Personal & Home Care.
This seminar would give opportunities

To the user segment to voice their opinion on their perception of the
growth in their sector which would in turn mean demand for chemicals.
