ACTIVITY 2 – MORE CHEMICAL CHANGES
Assessment Objectives:
 Evidence can be used to determine whether a chemical change has occurred (for example: color change,
generation of a gas, formation of a precipitate, energy transfer, use of indicators). (2.3.a)
1. Double replacement reactions in well plates:

Prep hint:
 The solutions above will be used again in later experiments. It saves time to label and fill the dropper bottles
now as they can be used in future activities.
 The lab can also be done as a microscale lab, eliminating the need to collect the waste and dispose of it later.
Chemical disposal:
 Collect contents of 24 well plates in tray and then store in labeled waste container. Contact Joni Rix for disposal
when container is full.
2. Ziploc bag experiment

Chemical Disposal:
Contents of the resealable bag can be rinsed down the sink with an excess of water.
3. Limewater experiment
Materials
Amount per group
250 mL erlynmeyer flask

Calcium hydroxide solution (limewater)

Soda straw

Chemical disposal:
 Limewater – collect in a labeled waste container and contact DPS for collection when container is full.
Alternately, the solution can be diluted to a final concentration of 1M, neutralized to a pH of 5-9 by the addition
of 3M hydrochloric acid, and then flushed down the drain with a 20-fold excess of water.
