October 2004. Election of new members. The term of the mandates of three ordinary members of the Board:
S.G. Rohozinski from Warsaw, A. van der Woude from Groningen and B. Vignon from Grenoble will expire in
March 2002. The procedure for the election of three new ordinary members was started and will be finalised in
May 2002. At present the Board is composed of ten ordinary members and six co-opted members, the Chairman
being a co-opted member in charge. A representative from NuPECC attends the Board meetings.
S. Aberg from Lund was appointed as Treasurer of the Division in replacement of B. Vignon from Grenoble.
2.
EPS Nuclear Physics Division Prize named after Lise Meitner. For the year 2000, the Nuclear Physics Division
Prize, named after Lise Meitner and sponsored by EURISYS Mesures, was awarded to Peter Armbruster (GSI,
Darmstadt), Gottfried Muenzenberg (GSI, Darmstadt) and Yuri Ts. Oganessian (Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear
reactions, Dubna), for their unique work over a long period on the synthesis of heavy elements, which has led to the
discovery of new elements in the region of nuclear charges with Z=102 to Z=109. Peter Armbruster received the
Diploma and the Medal at the XXXIX Winter Meeting on Nuclear Physics, Bormio (I) in January 2001. Gottfried
Muenzenberg and Yuri Oganessian received Diplomas and Medals during the Sandanski meeting in May 2001. For
the year 2002 the Prize is still sponsored by EURISYS Mesures, the Call for Nominations has been opened and the
deadline for the submission of the proposals has been fixed on 23.02.02. The final decision will be taken in May
2002. The awarding of the Prize will be done in August 2002 at EPS-12 in Budapest. Text of the call:

XVII and XVIII Nuclear Physics Divisional Conferences.
Due to the difficult political situation in Israel, the XVII Nuclear Physics Divisional Conference, planned to take
place in January 2002 in Eilat, has been definitely cancelled. In order to make fruitful the large amount of work
done for the preparation of the Conference, a Symposium, in the form of Euroconference, will be organised in
Debrecen (Hungary) from Sept. 30 until Oct. 3, 2002 on the subject: “Nuclear Physics in Astrophysics”. The XVIII
Divisional Conference will be held in 2004 on the subject. “Nuclear Physics and Applications”.
4.
Euroconference on East-West coordination on Nuclear Science, Sandanski-II, Sandanski (Bulgaria)
The second “European East-West Coordination Meeting on Nuclear Science”, organized by the Nuclear Physics
Division of EPS in the form of Euroconference in Sandanski (Bulgaria), met with outstanding success, with a total
of 115 participants from 20 eastern and western countries. Among the new developments a special INTAS program
for Nuclear Physics may be defined in the near future and Collaboration contracts with eastern Institutions are
encouraged to contain support for the work done at home. Information on the meeting and its scientific and
executive issues may be found in www.sandanski.ru
5.
Position paper on nuclear energy.
The position paper on Nuclear Energy Issues worked out and approved by the Nuclear Physics Board was endorsed
by the EPS Council as Position Paper PP8 “The future of Nuclear Energy”.
6.
East-West relations
The composition of the NPB East-West task force was renewed: the present members are: W. von Oertzen
(Chairman), R. Kalpakchieva, C. Leclercq-Willain, A. Kugler, R. Lovas, Yu.N. Novikov.
7.
PANS project on popularisation of Nuclear Physics
PANS (Public Awareness of Nuclear Science) is a common activity of the EPS Nuclear Physics Division and
NuPECC. The initiative is aimed at spreading awareness of the importance of Science within the public, in
particular of Nuclear Science, where misconceptions are numerous. Within the PANS initiatives it is worth
mentioning the Book on Nuclear Physics that was finally edited in the English version and is sold in USA and
England. Next step will be the translation of the book in other languages. The Exposition on Radioactivity was
already presented in Milan, Paris and Wiesbaden; the German version will move to Vienna and the Italian one to
Padua. A new proposal for EC financing of the PANSweb project will be submitted to EC. A. Van der Woude was
replaced in the PANS Board by H. Freiesleben; the new Chairman of the PANS Board will be C. Bargholtz.
8.
Relationships with NuPECC.
R. Johnson from Guildford and R. Lovas from Debrecen were appointed as observers of the Nuclear Physics Board
at the NuPECC meetings in replacement of R.A. Ricci.
9.
EPS-12 Conference, Budapest August 26-30, 2002.
The speakers for the plenary talks in Nuclear Physics at EPS-12 had finally been selected: J. Stachel on
“Deconfined Nuclear Matter at SPS” and H. Nifenecker (ISN Grenoble) on “Transmutations”. A Parallel Session
on Nuclear Physics will be held at EPS-12 on the subject: “Approaching the dripline (unstable nuclei)”, B. Jonson
is the convener.
10. Euroconferences and Sponsored Conferences in Nuclear Physics.
In 2001 the Nuclear Physics Division organised two Euroconferences:
a) XVII Divisional Conference “Nuclear Physics in Astrophysics” EILAT2001/2002 in Eilat (Israel), which were
cancelled due to the political instabilities in the area.
b) Sandanski II meeting: “European East-West Coordination Meeting on Nuclear Science”, in Sandanski
(Bulgaria) on May, 5-9, 2001.
In 2001 one Conference on Nuclear Physics applied and was approved for EPS Sponsorship:
a) SPIN2001 “Advanced Study Institute, Spin and Symmetries”, Praha, July 15-28, 2001
In 2002 one Euroconference will be organised by the Nuclear Physics Division:
a) Symposium on Nuclear Physics replacing the XVII Divisional Conference “Symposium on Nuclei at the
driplines and related Astrophysical problems”. Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 2002.
In 2002 two Conferences on Nuclear Physics applied and were approved for EPS Sponsorship:
a) Erice2002 “Quarks in hadron and Nuclei”, Erice September 16-24, 2002
b) IRRMA-V “Topical meeting on Industrial Radiation and Radioisotope Measurement Application”, Bologna
June 9-14, 2002
