Real Chocolate Facts...
There is a world of difference between ‘real chocolate’ and mass produced chocolate. Real
chocolate is actively good for you!
Real chocolate is rich in antioxidants. It is a hedge against heart disease and needn’t make you
fat - a bar of good quality chocolate, has one tenth the calories of mass produced chocolate!
Real chocolate is one of the most nutritious and easily digestible foods known. It contains a
multitude of vitamins (A1, B1, B2, C, D & E), minerals (calcium, potassium, sodium,
magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, chromium and phosphorous) and complex alkaloids, all of
which enhance health and well-being. The iron in chocolate also comes in a form 93% useable
by the body, the oxalic acid helping bond the iron and calcium so it is bio-available
Real Chocolate is low in sugar and has a low glycaemic index, meaning it keeps you feeling full
for longer and helps keep your blood glucose levels steady
The natural occurring antidepressant in real chocolate is called phenylethylamine (PEA), which
increases the serotonin levels in the brain. It can induce a euphoric state, as well as boosting
energy levels and mental alertness
Chocolate is also rich in flavinoids (also found in red wine) and other chemical compounds
known to educe the likelihood of deep vein thrombosis and strokes.
Cocoa butter has been proven to lower blood cholesterol levels, and chocolate is rich in
antioxidants, which help to destroy the unhealthy free radicals & boost the immune system, two
of the most important factors in preventing cancer (Real Chocolate, Chantal Coady 2003)
The biological explaination for craving chocolate is that it induces the release of brain
endorphins - the body’s own opiate. (The British Nutrition Foundation)
Dark Chocolate not only has lower levels of saturated fats than milk chocolate, but also
contains a high level of flavonoids, chemicals with antioxidant properties, which help reduce the
risk of potentially deadly blood clots and ‘bad’ cholesterol production, thus helping protect
against heart disease (The Times, Body & Soul (Feb 2004))
The Chocolate Society, of which Coco of Bruntsfield is a member, aims to alert the populace to
the cocoa content in bars. Mass produced chocolate squeezes out the expensive cocoa and
cocoa butter in favour of cheaper sugar, vegetable fat & powdered milk.
What better way to look after your health, than becoming a real chocolate connoisseur!
Welcome, come in and enjoy...
