Allegory: a story, painting etc in which the events and characters represent ideas or teach a moral lesson
Alliteration: repetition of consonant sounds Ex: Peter Piper Picked a Peck…
Allusion: a reference in a literary work to a person, place, or thing in history or another work of literature.
Analogy: comparison of two pairs which have the same relationship (like a long simile/metaphor)
Anaphora/Repetition: Where a specific word, phrase, or structure is repeated several times to emphasize a particular
idea.
Apostrophe: when the speaker addressed a nonliving object, idea, or person
Assonance: (similar to alliteration) repeating vowel sounds Ex: the Soul selects her own Society
Cacophony: a loud unpleasant mixture of sounds Opposite of euphony.
Cliché: overused expression or idea
Connotation an association that comes along with a particular word. a quality or an idea that a word makes you think
of that is more than its basic meaning
Denotation: dictionary definition; the exact meaning of a word, without the feelings or suggestions that the word may
imply. It is the opposite of “connotation
Dialect: a form of a language which is spoken only in one area, with words or grammar that are slightly different
from other forms of the same language
Dialogue: a conversation in a book, play, or film
Euphony: soothing pleasant sounds. Opposite of cacophony.
Foreshadowing: Where future events in a story, or perhaps the outcome, are suggested/hinted by the author before
they happen
Homily: a speech given as part of a Christian church ceremony
Hyperbole: Extreme exaggeration
Idiom: a group of words that has a special meaning that is different from the ordinary meaning of each separate word.
For example, 'under the weather' is an idiom meaning 'ill'.

happens or is true; when you use words that are the opposite of what you really mean
Juxtaposition: to put things together, especially things that are not normally together, in order to compare them or to
make something new; n literature, it's when one theme or idea or person or whatever is paralleled to another.
Mood: Overall feeling of the story, poem, etc
Motif: A dominant theme or central idea.
Onomatopoeia: a word that imitates the sound it represents. Example:splash, wow, gush, kerplunk Oxymoron:

reveals a kind of truth which at first seems contradictory. Two opposing ideas
Parody: a piece of writing, music etc or an action that copies someone or something in an amusing way
Parallel Structure: Parallel structure is the term writers use to describe similar ideas expressed in similar ways. Easy
example: The sentence "I like running, fishing, and to ski" lacks parallel structure. The similar ideas are running,
fishing, and to ski, the three things you like to do. A more graceful and readable way to write them is to use parallel
structure: "I like running, fishing, and skiing."
Personification: giving human qualities to animals or objects
Point of View: The identity of the narrative voice; the person or entity through whom the reader experiences the story.
