Hannibal Crosses the Alps
During the Punic wars, Hannibal brought a Carthaginian army across the Alps and
invaded Italy. In his army, he had 37 elephants.

From 264 B.C. Rome was involved in a series of
wars in the western Mediterranean with its rival,
__________. At that time, Carthage was a
__________ city with a large trading empire
and powerful __________. In the first of these
Hannibal
wars, called the __________ Wars, Rome was
victorious, destroying the Carthaginian navy and capturing the island of
__________ from the Carthaginians in 241 B.C.
The rivalry did not end there however. In 218 B.C. the Carthaginians
launched an attack on Rome. The attack was led by a __________

range in northern Italy.
Though his army suffered severe __________ due to hunger, cold, and
attacks as he crossed the Alps, Hannibal won victory after victory against
the Romans. Instead of defeating Hannibal in Italy, the Romans began to
