Mythology Assignment
Project due Tuesday, Dec. 20
Historical Context: Ancient peoples created many different ways to
explained how their world worked. Some of these ideas, legends or myths
were passed down orally from generation to generation, while others were written down. Either
way, these stories have survived the test of time. They help us understand how the ancients
viewed the world around them and teach us important lessons about what characteristics and
values they believed were important for people to have.
Task: Read two myths: a Greek myth of your choice and a myth from a different time/culture
(Native America, Celtic, India, African, etc.) of your choice. Choose one of the project options
from the list below to complete and hand in. Your project must include a works
cited page.
Project Options:
1. Show a summary of the myth through a PowerPoint presentation that
contains slides with good graphics and pictures that relate to the myth.
2. Create a Thinking Map or series of Thinking Maps to show important
information about your myths (a summary, compare and contrast them, the causes and
effects of them, etc.) You can do this digitally (on the computer) or by hand.
3. After reading your myths, choose a god, goddess or other character from
each myth to write a bio-poem, acrostic, or other form of poem about. Your
presentation should describe the powers and personality of the characters of
your choice.
4. Read myths about why things occur in nature and the gods or goddesses
connected to those forces of nature. Use the newspaper, internet or other
new source to find a natural disaster that has recently occurred (within the
past 3-5 years). Write a myth story using the appropriate gods or goddesses
to explain the natural phenomena.
5. Make a movie of yourself acting out one of both of your myths. You may want to think about
costumes, scenery and recruiting classmates/friends/family members to help in your
presentation.
6. Write lyrics to a song about your myths or characters in your myths. Put your lyrics to a song
or rap (yours or any popular ones) and record it in audio or video form to hand in.
7. Design and paint a poster, collage, an artful creation depicting a scene from one of the
myths or a statue of a mythological character. On the back or attached to the artwork, write
a short explanation of how your artwork reflects your myth(s) and how your creation relates
to them.
8. Anything else you can come up with for a presentation that is prior approved.
