Greek Mythology



Myths were originally handed down by
word of mouth.
To the Greeks, great storytelling was a
very important part of their culture.
Homer, who wrote The Iliad and the
The Odyssey, was a famous Greek
writer.

Myths may have been written to explain a
natural phenomena, such as why the sun
rises, etc.
They usually contain good and evil royalty,
such as kings, princesses, etc.
It is common for sons to be raised by
someone other than their parents.
Myths contain imaginative creatures,
people, and animals displaying unusual
qualities.

There is often the use of magic to
undermine the hero or move the plot along.
The gods play a significant role in helping or
hindering the main characters.
The “good” characters of the story all show
similar characteristics – young, handsome,
clever, etc.
Myths often rely on the belief in fate, which
cannot be changed regardless of the
character’s actions

As you read each myth, or watch a
myth on the screen, note which
elements were used by writing the
name of the story next to the element.
