One Semester Elective
Interested in movies, literature, music, video games or comic books? Learn how ancient myths from
around the world are still with us today.
The class examines a variety of myths and legends, cultural and geographical concepts, historical
events, archaeological findings, art, music, architecture and sociological concepts.
Cultures examined include: Greek, Celtic (and Arthurian Legend), Norse, Egyptian, Hindu, Chinese and
Japanese.
The class prepares students for World Geography in 9th grade, World History in 10th grade and English
classes throughout high school. Social sciences such as philosophy, psychology, sociology, history,
geography, anthropology and archaeology are used when analyzing myths and cultures.
Eighth graders will be asked to select an Endorsement before starting high school. Arts and
Humanities is one of the Endorsements, and this class will help expose students to the different fields
the Arts and Humanities have to offer.
The class relates ancient myths to current trends in pop culture. Super Heroes (comics and movies)
and literary figures are compared. From Katniss, Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker and Tris to Jack
Sparrow, Maleficent, Scar and the Joker; they are all revealed to be archetypes from Jungian
Psychology which have been found in all cultures and their ancient myths.
