World War 1 Propaganda Poster Project “The first casualty when war comes is Truth.” —Hiram Johnson, 1917 Part of the job of any History student is to evaluate primary sources. In class we have learned about the different types of propaganda and have also used our knowledge to interpret World War 1 propaganda posters. Your task is to now apply that knowledge and create an original World War 1 themed propaganda poster. Directions: Using what you have learned from class, you must decorate the poster to be eye catching so that if a person were walking down the street it would get their attention. When creating the poster think about the following: Message: What is it going to say? Audience: Who are you addressing? Who do you want to read this poster? Choose your words according to your audience…rich intellectuals, small children, or someone in between. Purpose: Which branch of the military or gov. agency is this poster created to support? Symbols: Are there any symbols that stand for other things? Color: Is it colorful and eye catching? On the back of each poster should be a mini report on your poster and should include the following information: Who or what is your topic about? Explain how it relates to World War 1. An analysis of your own propaganda poster. You should clearly explain the significance of your slogan as well as why you included all of the images used. This mini report should be two well written paragraphs.
