REINFORCEMENT
Goal
NAME:
HOW CELLS GET ENERGY
CLASS:
BLM 2-10
 USE THIS PAGE TO REVIEW YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF CELLULAR ENERGY.
What to Do

Answer the following questions in full sentences. Use pages 48-49 of
SCIENCEPOWERTM 8 for assistance.
1. What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work.
2. What organelle makes energy in the cell?
The organelle that makes energy in the cell is the mitochondria.
3. How is turning on a computer like eating a sandwich?
Turning on a computer is like eating a sandwich because eating a sandwich
gives a person energy, just like turning on a computer gives it energy.
4. How does a plant get food?
A plant gets food by making it during photosynthesis.
5. What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make food. They take CO2 and
H2O in the presence of light energy and chlorophyll make glucose and O2.
6. What is the name given to the process that releases food energy?
Cellular respiration is the process that releases food energy.
7. Write the word equation for the chemical reaction of cellular respiration.
Carbohydrates + oxygen → carbon dioxide +water + energy
(6O2 + C6H12O6 
6CO2
+ 6H2O + energy)
8. Why would you expect to have many mitochondria in a muscle cell?
There would be many mitochondria in a muscle cell because muscles need
energy to do a lot of work.
9. Besides “powerhouse,” can you think of other words that describe mitochondria?
“Energy producer” / “Furnace”
10. Name some of the processes for which cells require energy.
Cells require energy for digesting nutrients, growing, reproducing, etc.
11. What is lactic acid?
Lactic acid is a by-product of fermentation. It can build up when you are
exercising and give you a cramp. It is a chemical that makes your muscles feel
stiff.
12. Three specialized cells are listed below. How do you think each of these cells use
energy?
Muscle cells: Muscle cells use energy to bend, lift, and move body parts.
Nerve cells: Nerve cells use energy to send messages throughout the body.
Sperm cells: Sperm cells use energy to swim.
