Chapter 4
Carbon Compounds
Watch/view the following videos and presentatons and take notes in your BILL:
Chapter 4 Organic Chemistry PowerPoint – linked on my website
Mr. Andersen’s Molecules of Life Video – linked on my website
Answer the following questions in your BILL
1. Explain how carbon’s electron configuration accounts for its ability to form large, complex, and
diverse organic molecules.
2. Distinguish among the three types of isomers: structural, geometric, and enantiomer.
3. Name the major functional groups found in organic molecules. Describe the basic structure of
each functional group and outline the chemical properties of the organic molecules in which
they occur. Feel free to create a table.
Chapter 5- The Structure and Function of Large Biological Molecules
Watch/view the following videos and presentations and take notes in your BILL:
Macromolecules Prezi – linked on my website
Review Mr. Andersen’s Molecules of Life Video from Chapter
Answer the following questions in your BILL
1. Identify what the formation of all macromolecules from their specific monomers has in
common.
2. Cellulose and starch are both made of repeating units of glucose. Discuss what is different
about their structure that gives them such different chemical properties and uses.
3. Lipids do not have a common chemical structure. Discuss why it is handy to group them
together into a class of macromolecules.
4. Contrast and compare the structure of a saturated fat versus an unsaturated fat.
5. Identify and describe the four levels of protein structure.
6. Describe how the 20 amino acids are similar, yet different in their structure.
7. Create a table to compare the four types of macromolecules. Include monomers, functions,
examples, and polymer if it applies.
