Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation sent a clear message to enslaved people and the Confederacy about the future of slavery. (that message being that there was no future for slavery) “I never in my life felt more certain that I am doing right than I do in signing this paper… If my name is every goes down in history it will be for this act, and my whole soul is in it.” --Abraham Lincoln, 1863 African Americans role in the Civil War: -At first, both the North and the South prevented African Americans from serving in their armies. As time passed, the North relaxed its rules. - The best known African American regiment was the 54th Massachusetts. - The Battle of Gettysburg was considered the turning point in the civil war. General Robert E. Lee of the Confederacy was defeated by the Union Army over the three day period July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, 1863. That is exactly what needed to happen in certain parts of our nation. The former Confederate states needed to be rebuilt and readmitted again into the Union (country).
