fat-free milk if desired; low fat-cream soups (thin, no
chunks or pureed).
Instructions: Sip fluids all day; continue vitamin
supplements**; same instructions as in Stage I
however keep in mind when you are having a “meal”
you may feel full after 2 tablespoons or ½ cup foodthe denser the food the faster you will feel full
(satiated). Make sure you are drinking your liquids
BETWEEN meals as your new “pouch” will only be
able to handle a limited amount of volume at a time.
Drink fluids 15 minutes before or 1 hour after meals.
Goals: sip 2-4 fluid ounces slowly per hour, total of 64
fl oz per day; protein 70 grams/day.
III
8-28
Soft
Types of foods: continue foods as in stage II; add one
new food at a time as tolerated, such as: blended
protein shakes, natural applesauce (you can add plain
protein powder if desired), creamy peanut butter,
bananas, cream of wheat, cream of rice or oatmeal
(start with 2 Tbsp serving size of each), soft canned
foods (pears or peaches in juice), soft cooked
vegetables (avoid asparagus and celery), mashed
potatoes or peeled baked or boiled potatoes- no butter
or milk added, low or non-fat cottage cheese or Ricotta
cheese, egg/egg substitute- do not fry or cook with
butter margarine or oil- use spray, dried beans or peas
cooked until very tender (easily mashable), low fat
cheese, low-carb tortillas, low fat crackers (includes
wholegrain or whole wheat such as Melba toast,
graham crackers, soda crackers, Tricuits)
Meal Plan:
Eat three (3) meals a day and (2) snacks
Limit fats and avoid high sugar foods/beverages
TIP: if hunger becomes a problem, you probably need
more protein or fluid. Choose high protein first, then
fruit, then vegetable and toast/crackers or potatoes last.
Instructions: Sip fluids all day; continue vitamin
supplements**; same instructions as in Stage I-II
Drink fluids 15 minutes before or 1 hour after meals.
Avoid starchy foods such as pasta, rice, bread,
biscuits, cornbread, bagels, muffins- these swell in
your stomach and cause you to be uncomfortable.

completely before swallowing.

fl oz per day; protein 70 grams/day

into pea sized/pinky nail sized pieces initially (you
probably will not have to do this as time progresses);
remember to chew very well before swallowing, avoid
drinking liquids with your meals- drink 15 min before
or 1 hour after as noted in above stages (sipping small
amounts of liquids at meals is acceptable if foods are
dry or too thick).
