I would encourage you to make flashcards or your own study sheet with this material. Plants have a cell wall made of cellulose, a tough fibrous material. The stem is responsible for the transportation of nutrients. The leaves are responsible for photosynthesis, or making food for the plant. The roots collect water and minerals from the soil. The stomata helps prevent water loss from a plant. It is found in the epidermal tissue. Guard cells regulate the opening and closing of the stomata. The epidermis of a plant is similar to the skin of an animal (derm = skin) The two types of vascular plant tissue are xylem and phloem. Sugars (made by photosynthesis) are transported throughout the plant by the phloem. (remember that PHLOEM FLOWS DOWN) Water is transported from the roots through the rest of the plant by the xylem. The leaf is the broad, flat organ that traps light energy for photosynthesis. The cuticle is the protective, waxy layer covering most fruit, leaves and stems. The seed is the structure that contains an embryo along with a food supply and is covered by a protective coat. The stem provides structural support for upright growth. A vascular plant contains tissues of tubelike, elongated cells through which water and food are transported. The root absorbs water and minerals from the soil. There are 4 main types of plant tissue: - Epidermal – the outermost layer of the plant; contains stomata. - Ground – used for transport, storage and photosynthesis (think of a carrot- this is mostly cortex, which is a type of ground tissue- used for storage of sugars) - Vascular – consists of xylem and phloem for transport of water and sugars. - Meristematic – found in rapidly growing areas of the plant (the budding parts of trees or the tips of roots) 1.
