Weekly Spelling Contract
Read the choices below to decide what activities you would like to complete
each week. You may choose any combination of activities as long as they total at
least 100 points . Spelling Contracts are due each Thursday! Please put the point
value next to each activity you complete. Add the points for each activity and
circle the total on the top of the first page.
*Some activities will require a parent to write a note in your spelling notebook
verifying that the activity has been completed.
25 Point Activities
1. Write each spelling word three times.
2. Write your spelling words in alphabetical order. Then write them in reverse
alphabetical order.
3. Write each spelling word without its vowels. Replace each vowel with a blank
line. Then write each spelling word without its consonants. Replace each
consonant with a blank line.
Example: apple = _ppl_ and a_ _ _ e
4. Write your spelling words in crayon or pen. Write each consonant letter in
red and each vowel in blue.
5. Write each word in ‘pyramid form’ or in ‘stair form’.
6. Print each word. Next to it, write the word in cursive.
7. Rainbow Spelling: Write your words in one color. Trace each word two times
with two other colors.
8. Write your words in order from the longest word to shortest and then from
shortest to longest.
9. Take a practice test with a parent and have them grade it. (Parent signature
required)
10. Telephone Words: Write each spelling word. Then translate each word into
numbers by looking at a telephone key pad. Ex. apple = 27753
11. Write each of your spelling words in 3 dimensional or bubble letters.
12. Write each of your spelling words as a ‘smiley face’. The first letter is the
left eye, the last letter is the right eye and the entire word is the mouth.
50 Point Activities
1. Write each word 4 times in cursive.
2. Type each word 4 times on a computer. Print it out or have an adult write a
note verifying completion.
3. Do a spelling art page. (Get these from Mrs. Ruppe)
4. Use ten spelling words in a complete sentence with proper punctuation.
5. Write your spelling words in secret code. (Use the Secret Code Key)
Challenge a parent or sibling to use the code to decode each word. Correct
their work. Example: glad = 7-12-1-4
6. Spelling Math: Which spelling word has the highest value? Which word has
the lowest value? Use the Secret Code Key to find a numeric value for each
letter.
7. Write each word as a ‘Disappearing Word’.
Example: happy = happ_, hap_ _, ha_ _ _, h_ _ _ _, _ _ _ _ _
8. Take a practice test at home given by a parent. Write any misspelled words
4 times. (Include parent signature in notebook)
9. Draw and color a picture. “Hide” the words in the picture. Please do not
color over the words.
10. Write your spelling words on cards (make 2 sets) and play “Memory Match”
with them against a parent or a sibling. (Parent note needed)
11. Use a thesaurus to find/write a synonym for each word. You must write your
word and then the synonym. Example: glad = happy
12. Make and complete a word search using www.puzzlemaker.com.
13. Cut out letters (not words) from headlines or ads in newspapers or
magazines. Paste the letters in your notebook to spell the words.
14. Use a dictionary to look up 10 of your spelling words. Write the guide words
at the top of the dictionary page next to each word. Also, include the page
number in the dictionary. You do not have to write the definition.
15. Write a mnemonic sentence to help you remember 10 of your spelling words.
Each letter of the word should start a word in the sentence. For example: a
mnemonic sentence for the word ‘throw’ might be: Ted has rented one
wheelbarrow.
75 Point Activities
1. Create a comic strip and write captions using at least 10 spelling words.
Underline your words and color in your illustrations.
2. Write a poem using 10 of your words in your best cursive handwriting. Give
it a title and illustrate it.
3. Write a TV commercial for your favorite toy (or anything you wish). Use at
least 10 of your words and be prepared to perform it for the class.
4. Pretend you are a news anchor, weather person, or reporter. Using at least
10 spelling words, write a news report.
5. Create a product on a poster you would like to sell and use 10 of your spelling
words to advertise it. Your poster must include the product, name,
illustration and cost. Be creative!
