For example, more than a million copies of the Alu sequence are present in the human genome, and these sequences have now been recruited to perform functions such as regulating gene expression. Another effect of these mobile DNA sequences is that when they move within a genome, they can mut ...

Translation uses tRNA molecules and ribosomes to join amino acids into a polypeptide chain according to the mRNA sequence (as read in codons) The universality of the genetic code means all organisms show the same relationship between genes and polypeptides (indicating a common ancestry and allowing ...

The p53 Gene: The Master Tumor-Suppressor Gene • About 50% of all human cancers are associated with defects in the p53 gene • A primary role for the p53 protein is to determine if a cell has incurred DNA damage – If so, p53 will promote three types of cellular pathways to prevent the division of ce ...

Mendel formed the basis of modern genetics by finding that genes were passed from parent to offspring & if a gene for a trait has two or more forms (alleles) then some alleles are dominant and some are recessive. Nutriepigenomics

Nutriepigenomics is the study of food nutrients and their effects on human health through epigenetic modifications. There is now considerable evidence that nutritional imbalances during gestation and lactation are linked to non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. If metabolic disturbances occur during critical time windows of development, the resulting epigenetic alterations can lead to permanent changes in tissue and organ structure or function and predispose individuals to disease.
