... During pregnancy, weight gain and the effects of hormones made by the placenta (also called the ‘afterbirth’) can cause “insulin resistance”. This means that your body needs more insulin to do the same amount of work. If your body is not able to make enough insulin the sugar can build up in your blo ...

... Noteworthy, in melanocytes and melanoma cells, cAMP regulates several signaling pathways that control multiple biological functions. Indeed, cAMP inhibits the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/AKT pathway that influences both differentiation and survival of melanocytes (Buscà et al., 1996; Khaled et al. ...

We found that women with two variant MC1R alleles displayed significantly greater analgesia from the κ-opioid, pentazocine, than all other groups. This study demonstrates an unexpected role for the MC1R gene, ...

Nutriepigenomics

Nutriepigenomics is the study of food nutrients and their effects on human health through epigenetic modifications. There is now considerable evidence that nutritional imbalances during gestation and lactation are linked to non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. If metabolic disturbances occur during critical time windows of development, the resulting epigenetic alterations can lead to permanent changes in tissue and organ structure or function and predispose individuals to disease.
