... The VNTR polymorphism in the MAOA promoter has five alleles containing 2, 3, 3.5, 4, and 5 copies of a 30-bp tandem repeat. In terms of expression, the MAOA gene is divided into two groups: a low MAOA activity group and a high MAOA activity group. The low MAOA activity group consists of the 2, 3, an ...

... Streptococcus pneumoniae is the first system in which genetic transformation was described in 1931. This process involves inducing ‘competency’ in the recipient bacterium to acquire exogenous DNA molecules. The signalling events which induce the competence state in Streptococcus pneumonia are comple ...

... Yes. The infectious prion protein can be carried in the body for some length of time before the illness shows itself. If you are at risk of inheriting a genetic prion disease mutation, you may carry the disease causing prion protein in your body while you are healthy but have no sign of the illness. ...

... When a gamete is passed down, the chromosome inherited by an offspring from a parent is actually a mosaic of the parent’s two chromosomes. Suppose we have two loci on the same chromosome, locus 1 and locus 2, where locus 1 has alleles A1 and A2, and locus 2 has alleles B1 and B2. In the example belo ...

Nutriepigenomics

Nutriepigenomics is the study of food nutrients and their effects on human health through epigenetic modifications. There is now considerable evidence that nutritional imbalances during gestation and lactation are linked to non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. If metabolic disturbances occur during critical time windows of development, the resulting epigenetic alterations can lead to permanent changes in tissue and organ structure or function and predispose individuals to disease.
