Damage Control: The Pleiotropy of DNA Repair Genes

... mus mutants also exhibited severe defects in mitotic chromosome behavior (Baker et al. 1978; Gatti et al. 1980). These findings led to the now widely held view that genes defined by repair-defective mutations are less likely to define functions specifically involved in the repair of mutagen-induced ...

Application title: Cloning genes for expression in AAV vectors for

... Our aim is to utilise rAAV vectors for gene transfer or gene targeting to various organs for the production of recombinant proteins in bodily fluids for use in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Gene transfer involves the extra-chromosomal expression of a gene expression construct t ...

The broader phenotype is highly heritable: 92% of MZ pairs in a recent twin study (8) were concordant for a broader spectrum of related cognitive or social abnormalities compared with just 10% of DZ pairs (9). The degree of risk to family member ...

... of At-Wnt8 in more detail, we then investigated the effect of At-Wnt8pRNAi on the expression of other genes involved in spider development. In Achaearanea, At-Krüppel-2 (At-Kr2) is expressed in a stripe marking the presumptive posterior and anterior regions of L3 and L4, respectively (Figure S3F). ...

Changes in Plasma Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL)

... The variable extent of the changes in LDL-C and HDL-C, upon restoration of the euthyroid state in hypothyroid patients, as observed in clinical practice, existed also in our patients. Changes in LDL-C were, however, not associated with the AvaII polymorphism. This is in contrast with the results of ...

MAMMALS THAT BREAK THE RULES:Genetics of Marsupials and

... Mammals share an XX female:XY male system of chromosomal sex determination in which the Y is male determining and the X is highly conserved because of its participation in X inactivation. Rules governing the organization and behavior of X and Y chromosomes were formulated by detailed studies in mous ...

This is likely to be due to positive selection on non-synonymous sites during the evolution of new al ...

... (b) In mice, two genes affecting coat colour are on different chromosomes. One gene controls whether there is any black pigment in the hairs. The dominant allele of this gene, B, results in black fur. The recessive allele, b, results in white fur. The second gene controls banding of the fur. The dom ...

The Standard of Perfection: Thoughts about the Laying Hen Model

... B. Genetic characteristics of ovarian tumors from the hens did not vary according to chemopreventive agent exposure. Ovarian adenocarcinomas were examined from 102 hens in flock A and from 70 hens in flock B, providing the main finding that p53 abnormalities were highly associated with 4 years of ov ...

Nutriepigenomics

Nutriepigenomics is the study of food nutrients and their effects on human health through epigenetic modifications. There is now considerable evidence that nutritional imbalances during gestation and lactation are linked to non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. If metabolic disturbances occur during critical time windows of development, the resulting epigenetic alterations can lead to permanent changes in tissue and organ structure or function and predispose individuals to disease.
