Selective Trapping or Rotation of Isotropic Dielectric Microparticles

... spot (1/e2 diameter of 20 μm) fully covers one single PAS (diameter of 11.325 μm) and the circularly polarized light can be safely considered as a plane wave at the sample plane. Figure 4a shows four recorded frames at t = 1, 2, 3, and 4 s extracted from the movie clip when the PAS is excited by lef ...

Because the laser beam is deflected by astronomical seeing on the way up, the returning laser light does not move around in the sky as astronomical sources do. In order to keep astronomical images steady, a natural star nearby i ...

(Digital Micro-Mirror Device) Based Multi-Object

... The system is spectrally quasi-imaging in the sense that it can be adjusted to measure the reflectance from arbitrary regions of interest. In addition it will be possible to do multi-object spectroscopy by carefully designing a mask that allows several spectrally different objects in the scene to be ...

... The propagation of electromagnetic waves in inhomogeneous media is an important topic in various branches of physics, including optics, plasma physics, astrophysics, and condensed matter physics [1, 2, 3, 4]. Great attention has been paid to the cases where the inhomogeneity is random or periodic [1 ...

Physical basis of colors seen in Congo red-stained amyloid

... Amyloid stained by Congo red is traditionally said to show apple-green birefringence in polarized light, although in practice various colors may be seen between accurately crossed polarizing filters, called polarizer and analyzer. Other colors are seen as the polarizer and analyzer are uncrossed and ...

Magnetic circular dichroism

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) is the differential absorption of left and right circularly polarized (LCP and RCP) light, induced in a sample by a strong magnetic field oriented parallel to the direction of light propagation. MCD measurements can detect transitions which are too weak to be seen in conventional optical absorption spectra; they can also probe paramagnetic properties and the symmetry of the electronic levels of the studied systems, such as metal ion sites.
