As for hollow core fibers, planar dielectric hollow waveguides support only leaky modes [9], the losses becoming sufficiently low only when the waveguide separation is much larger than the waveleng ...

... The presence of an evanescent field is the signature of near-field optics. There are two main characteristics of these waves that distinguish them from propagating waves. The first is their intensity profile, which exponentially decays away from the source that created them. This means that they are ...

... To have two electromagnetic waves interfering in accordance with the equations given in Chapter 7, they must have the same polarization. Note that it is always possible for an observer to receive two electromagnetic waves with the same polarization. This happens when the direction of polarization is ...

... rays are actually refracted twice—once upon entering the lens and once upon leaving it. This is because both times they are entering a new medium at an angle other than 90 degrees. Rays closest to the edges of the lens are refracted most. Rays passing through the center of the lens—along the princip ...

Magnetic circular dichroism

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) is the differential absorption of left and right circularly polarized (LCP and RCP) light, induced in a sample by a strong magnetic field oriented parallel to the direction of light propagation. MCD measurements can detect transitions which are too weak to be seen in conventional optical absorption spectra; they can also probe paramagnetic properties and the symmetry of the electronic levels of the studied systems, such as metal ion sites.
