... measurements (Damm 2007) are illustrated in fig. 3. It can be seen that the spectral stray light can span 60 or more channels. The gap around channel 0 is due to the fact that only the out-of-band channels are shown (Damm 2007). While this method quantifies the stray light over “long ranges”, it is ...

High resolution spectral self-interference fluorescence microscopy

... The advantage of light microscopy over electron and scanned probe microscopy is the ability to image the interior of biological specimens. Light would be an ideal carrier of microscopic information if it weren’t for the resolution limit. But because of diffraction, standard light microscopes are not ...

... Global estimation of optical flow has traditionally been formulated as a continuous variational optimization problem with linearized data terms [4, 20] and many of the most successful works still follow the same paradigm to date [8, 12, 30, 34, 35, 37, 40, 43]. To estimate displacements larger than ...

Because, theoretically, extremely large wave vectors can be achieved along the unbound IFC hyperboloid, the cavity size can be squeezed into a nanometre scale. Figure 2 shows the calculated cavity modes in indefinite optica ...

For optimization without pump, we see for this particular configuration the suppression of the shaped field beginning around zero time delay with a maximum effect of (20±2)% at 3.5 ps. For optimization with pump on, we find that the dynamics of the peak to ...

However, if there is a steep intensity gradient (i.e., near the focus of a laser), the second component of the optical force, the gradient force, must be considered. The gradient force, ...

... Fiber Amplifiers and Regenerators are necessary for long haul circuits. The difference between the two is that amplifiers only take the signal and boost its levels, which often includes noise. This can have an effect with the signal to noise ratio that will show up as attenuation on the signal level ...

Harold Hopkins (physicist)

Harold Horace Hopkins FRS (1918–1994) was a renowned British physicist. His Wave Theory of Aberrations, (published by Oxford University Press 1950), is central to all modern optical design and provides the mathematical analysis which enables the use of computers to create the wealth of high quality lenses available today. In addition to his theoretical work, his many inventions are in daily use throughout the world. These include zoom lenses, coherent fibre-optics and more recently the rod-lens endoscopes which 'opened the door' to modern key-hole surgery. He was the recipient of many of the world's most prestigious awards and was twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. His citation on receiving the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society in 1984 stated: ""In recognition of his many contributions to the theory and design of optical instruments, especially of a wide variety of important new medical instruments which have made a major contribution to clinical diagnosis and surgery.""
