Theme 2 – Climate Change

... Climate change • Climate change is a natural phenomenon • In the past the world climate has fluctuated over millions of years. • We have had warmer periods called inter-glacial (like the current warm period we are in) • And cool periods called glacial (known as ice ages) • These changes are thought ...

... So we now have a fairly detailed picture of how heat is distributed vertically in the atmosphere. Sunlight that hits the surface heats the surface, which then radiates some of that heat back up in the infrared. Greenhouse gases like H2O, CO2, and a few others absorb some of that radiation, heating ...

Instrumental temperature record

The instrumental temperature record shows fluctuations of the temperature of earth's climate system. Initially the instrumental temperature record only documented land and sea surface temperature, but in recent decades instruments have also begun recording ocean temperature. Data is collected from thousands of meteorological stations around the globe and through satellite observations. The longest-running temperature record is the Central England temperature data series, that starts in 1659. The longest-running quasi-global record starts in 1850.
