... While natural greenhouse gases are vital to prevent our world from freezing over, a marked increase may spell big trouble. Indeed, there is disturbing evidence of climate change: melting glaciers; forest fires; drought; heat waves; moresevere storms; and the loss of certain plant and animal species. ...

... The primary focus of any farm, industry or investment decision to respond to climate change should be to improve farm profitability (Kingwell et al., 2013). This will have a positive flow on effect in improving adaptive capacity. However, to date there appears little evidence in the literature that ...

GCMs are based on the laws of physics, and have been developed over many years in numerous centres around the world. These models are rigorously tested for their ability to reproduce past climate. ...

Modelled predictions of future climate changes in the European Alps, including spatial and temporal patterns of temperature and precipitation anomalies relative to present conditions, have been undertaken on both continental and regional scales. We estimate that a 1°C rise in day-time maximum temperature during the ripening phase of rice increases harvest by 27 kg. ha-1, but our analyses also suggests that productivity declines when the daytime maximum temperature goes beyond 29.9°C. Climate thresholds and tipping elements In climate research, concern about the prospect of catastrophe and collapse has been a primary motivation for analysing possible physical thresholds in the climate system. These are sometimes described as tipping points that correspond with ‘tipping elements’ ...

Instrumental temperature record

The instrumental temperature record shows fluctuations of the temperature of earth's climate system. Initially the instrumental temperature record only documented land and sea surface temperature, but in recent decades instruments have also begun recording ocean temperature. Data is collected from thousands of meteorological stations around the globe and through satellite observations. The longest-running temperature record is the Central England temperature data series, that starts in 1659. The longest-running quasi-global record starts in 1850.
