... What distinguishes A DNA from B DNA? A DNA is wider and flatter: 11 base-pairs per turn instead of 10.5. The helix diameter is 26 angstroms instead of 20. The major groove is narrow and subdued. Is base-pairing the same? Yes. But the bases join around the axis and not through the axis and are tilted ...

... A DNA marker is a known locus where the allele can be identified in the laboratory. Short Tandem Repeats (STR) are markers with alleles given by integers. If an STR allele is 5, a certain word (e.g. CAGGTG) is repeated exactly 5 times at that locus: . . . CAGGTGCAGGTGCAGGTGCAGGTGCAGGTG. . . ...

DNA database

A DNA database or DNA databank is a database of DNA profiles. A DNA database can be used in the analysis of genetic diseases, genetic fingerprinting for criminology, or genetic genealogy. DNA databases may be public or private, but the largest ones are national DNA databases. When a match is made from a national DNA database to link a crime scene to an offender who has provided a DNA sample to a database that link is often referred to as a cold hit. A cold hit is of value in referring the police agency to a specific suspect but is of less evidential value than a DNA match made from outside the DNA database.
