Short-axis steady-state free precession (SSFP) cines with whole LV coverage (8 mm slice thickness, no slice gap, temporal resolution 38.1 ms, echo time 1.07 ms, in-plane pixel size 1.5×0.8 mm) were used for estimating LVM and volumes, which were indexed to body surface area. A validated10 thresholdd ...

... tachyarrhythmias such as atrial flutter (AFL) or atrial fibrillation (AF). The optimal use of antiarrhytmic drug therapy depends in part on understanding the underlying mechanisms of AFL and AF and pharmacodynamis of each antiarrhythmic drug. Currently, there is a large body of experimental and clin ...

In chick embryos, dHAND and eHAND are coexpressed throughout the heart tube before, during, and after cardiac looping and display a degree of functional redundancy (Srivastava et al., 1995). In mice, dHAND expression becomes specifically enhanced in the right ventricle after cardiac looping ( ...

... ablation. Over the years the experience in epicardial access has been more and more increasing and, particularly in high volume centers it has become a routine procedure. The current problem, now, is not only in which type of cardiomyopathy we have to perform the epicardial ablation but, above all, ...

... Cardiac muscle cells, like other excitable cells, have a resting electrical gradient across the cell membrane. In the quiescent state (during diastole), the inside of the cell (cytoplasm) is electrically negative relative to the outside of the cell. That is to say, the cell membrane separates positi ...

... 1. Aortic stenosis (AS) is a pathological narrowing of the aortic valve that obstructs blood flow out of the heart. In adults, AS is most commonly caused by age-related calcification of the aortic valves, although it can also be the result of a congenital heart defect or rheumatic heart disease.(1, ...

Mitral insufficiency

Mitral insufficiency (MI), mitral regurgitation or mitral incompetence is a disorder of the heart in which the mitral valve does not close properly when the heart pumps out blood. It is the abnormal leaking of blood backwards from the left ventricle, through the mitral valve, into the left atrium, when the left ventricle contracts, i.e. there is regurgitation of blood back into the left atrium. MI is the most common form of valvular heart disease.
