... In this dissertation, I will present theoretical studies on several aspects of quantum Hall states in both continuum and lattice systems. In the continuum case, one can understand the quantum Hall states starting from the Landau levels of charged particles moving in a magnetic field. If an integral ...

... Dirac’s wave equation is a relativistic generalization of the Schrödinger wave equation. In 1934 this brilliantly successful equation was shorn of half of its solutions by a questionable bit of mathematical slight-of-hand. Because it was “politically correct,” this bit of juggling became the accepte ...

... The left-hand side, Ft, is the product of the average force and the time interval over which it acts. This product is called the impulse, and its unit of measurement is the newton-second (Ns). The magnitude of an impulse is found by determining the area under the curve of a forcetime graph, such a ...

We shall show that by tuning the JJs in and out of resonance with the nanomechanical resonator, qubit states prepared in a junction can be passed to the resonator and stored there, and can later be passed back to the original junction or transferred to ...

Quantum vacuum thruster

A quantum vacuum plasma thruster (or Q-thruster) is a proposed type of spacecraft thruster that would work in part by acting on the virtual particles produced by quantum vacuum fluctuations. This was proposed as a possible model for an engine that could produce thrust without carrying its own propellant. Some physicists working with microwave resonant cavity thrusters think that they might be the first examples of such an engine.
