Modeling Mitosis
This project is designed to help you visualize the six phases of the cell cycle.
1. Pick a slip of paper that describes the type of cell you will be working with. Go to
Google Images to find out what your cell looks like and maintain that shape throughout
your project.
2. All of your work will be done directly on your lab table, so clear it off. Yes, you will be
writing on your lab table with chalk. Chalk shows up better if it is a little wet, so keep
a small beaker of water handy for dipping your chalk in.
3. Your cell will have a total of 8 chromosomes and you will use a different color of chalk
for each pair of chromosomes. Therefore, you will need 4 colors of chalk just for
chromosomes
4. Your project will consist of all 6 phases of the cell cycle, so keep that in mind as you
draw so you do not run out of room
5. As you move through your project be sure to label each phase of the cell cycle and the
following structures where they appear.


Cell membrane
Centrioles
Centromere
Chromotids

Spindle fibers
6. Begin by drawing your cell in interphase. Remember, your cell has 8 chromosomes or 4
homologous pairs. You will need to use your four different colors here. Be sure to add
all of the appropriate labels.
7. Carefully draw and label the remaining 5 phases of the cell cycle.
8. When you think you are finished ask your teacher for evaluation. Please put the title
of “Modeling Mitosis” in you lab notebook so I have a place to record your score.
9. To get your final score, you will need to clean up your lab table with a damp cloth!
